    Conducting research as a student.

I have been working at Swarthmore College

    Pros

As far as student jobs go at Swarthmore, conducting research is one of the best because it is a learning opportunity that you get paid for!

    Cons

The pay is close to minimum wage, like it is for any student job here at Swarthmore College (to my knowledge), regardless of how talented the student is and what he or she is contributing.

I worked at Swarthmore College part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

A phonathon caller earns the highest pay grade, works in a fun environment, has the opportunity to earn many bonuses that come in the form of Amazon.com or Swarthmore Bookstore gift cards, and even gets a free dinner and candy while on the job!

    Cons

Making call after call, day after day, and week after week really wears you down after a while. I would recommend not working this job more than two or three days a week. Also, the people you call may not always be polite. Just keep in mind that their rudeness is not directed so much at you as it is at any of their dissatisfaction at Swarthmore as an institution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is generally great. The only problem I can think of is that their directions are not always clear, but that usually ends up hurting them rather than their underlings in the form of extra paperwork.

I have been working at Swarthmore College part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

-Chance to really help students with a range of problems.
    -great leadership experience.

    Cons

-pay is terrible-it was arranged as an hourly wage for four hours a week, when it should be either a stipended position or a position where you're actually paid for the hours you work (there were some weeks where I worked 10-20 hours and was paid for four).
-the SAM directors have no clue what they're doing.
-If you really want to help students, become an RA instead (or be a SAM for a year as a precursor to being an RA).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out what the SAM program can really do for students. Stop hiring bad people and ignoring good ones. Stop focusing on study breaks when you should be figuring out how to teach SAMs to support students who are struggling academically.

I have been working at Swarthmore College as an intern

    Pros

Swarthmore College is filled with inspiring students and professors. Benefit package is solid. The work environment around the campus is upbeat and positive.

    Cons

In some aspects, Swarthmore College is a bit slow to act on staff concerns.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train anyone in a management position how to lead and empower those around them.

I have been working at Swarthmore College as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

The Dean's Office is great and very responsive. Dean Head is an amazing person to work for who has so much compassion and care for students. Although students sometimes give the administration a hard time, they don't know how much they try.

    Cons

Other RAs are too caring and involved sometimes to the point where it's not beneficial to them. It makes me question wether I'm not doing my job properly. Then I realized part of the job is knowing when to pull back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I honestly think that there needs to be more funds devoted to hall life. There should be a devoted manual of activities that we can do and certain suggested events to do with our halls.
