I worked at Swift Transportation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Numerous terminal locations allowing mobility and relocation

    Cons

Inconsistent mid level management, as a direct report emails, calls and VM typically went unanswered by immediate manager. Unchecked bios actions and continuous policy/protocol violations prevailed at management level by same manager openly. This manager had 7 direct reports leave Swift Transportation during my 3 year employment including myself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better management of department heads reflecting long term attrition.

If you are looking to work long hours, be away from your family all the time, and be forced into applying for welfare...look no further, Swift is the company for you!

I have been working at Swift Transportation full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I have met several nice folks/fellow road warriors, that unfortunately fell for the same pitch from the recruiters as I did. The training program itself was pretty in depth, and I felt as if I learned all the necessary skills needed to become a safe and detail oriented driver. My mentor was very easy to get along with, and gave me the opportunity to get all of my drive hours in as quickly as possible, so I could hit the road as a solo driver in a short period of time.

    Cons

There are too many to list, and I am sure to miss some, but I am going to try and be as detailed as possible. It begins with the recruiters (and yes, I do realize it is their job to make Swift look like a great place to work), but they flat out lie, about everything. I was told that I would be making $300-500/wk. during training, my first check was a whopping $98. I was told that I would average 2500-2900 miles weekly, as a solo driver...I am lucky to get 1,500 @.33/mile, that's a whole $495/wk before taxes and "benefits" are taken out. If your truck breaks down, and you are unable to work go out and buy an industrial sized jar of Vaseline and be prepared to take it up the rear...because you will have to fight tooth and nail to get your meager $50.00 a day that is promised, and forget about getting a loaner! As for the administrative staff, they suck...forget about getting in touch with anyone, ever! Forget about being organized and prepared on any level, and actually expecting anyone in the office to be remotely competent. This is by far the worst company that I have ever worked for, and I can't wait until my 1 year contractual obligation to them is over. That being said, if you are looking to lose everything you own, or maybe screw over your family/kids/baby momma, or you are just enjoy being screwed over repeatedly without mercy, then I would highly suggest that you apply with Swift they will make your dreams come true!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Worry less about impressing your stockholders, and start caring about your drivers that are making you look good as a company. Hire an outsider to audit your business practices, office staff and start terminating all of your dead weight, and hire people that are driven to succeed.

    Pros

Start off to a career in Trucking.

    Cons

.25 cpm is a very low starting pay. Govern speed is only at 63 mph which is slow I'd be fine with 65 mph.

Current Employee - Professional Truck Driver in Macclenny, FL

I have been working at Swift Transportation full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    1 job security steady work
2 the ability to get started driving
3 having reefer added to your resume

    Cons

You will not make $700 at all more like $400 to $550 weekly. You will work 7 days at night never see your family. Your just a number we should be payed by the hour not by the mile your load is rarely ready when you get there. Driving from JACKSONVILLE to MACCLENNY FL is not worth it for what they pay and time spent getting a load. Trust the ends will not meet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more money for the work and wasted time spent there or continue to lose workers I will be leaving soon

I worked at Swift Transportation full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Large company, able to handle a lot of freight, decent equipment, many terminals to park, great way to see the country!

    Cons

Large company, do not become an owner operator, not much time home, not much room for growth, dedicated accounts take priority over everything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Swift Transportation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Swift is a good trucing company to work for. Most of the driver managers that I worked for new their jobs ( my driver manager had 13 years OTR experience before becoming a DM). I enjoyed traveling all over the country and working as a Driver/Trainer helping to pass on my knowledge to the new drivers coming into the company.

    Cons

max cpm has not changed in several years. Some Driver Managers are not what you would call "People persons", and do not always take conditions into account.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Insure that "ALL" Driver Managers have at least 5 years over the road experience.
