Not bad if you don't have other options

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Dublin, CA

I have been working at Sybase

ProsCoworkers are are nice and helpful.
Dublin location is very good with an easy commute and lots of on-site facilities (gym, child care, caffeteria)
Some of the work is challenging.

ConsFear based management culture.
No business vision from the line managers.
Executive leadership only cares about short term profits or cost cutting in that order.
No training.
Cheap culture so the infrastructure is generally not best of breed but rather the cheapest solution.
No pay raises while company made record profits!

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend some money to make money.
Treat your employees as assets rather than expendable commodities.
Thin out the management structure.

Employees are taken for granted

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Dublin, CA

I have been working at Sybase

ProsSome interesting projects
Some good people

ConsEmployees taken for granted
Expensive health plans, no stock options, vacation too short.
Bonus plans ridiculously low for rank and file. High for executives.
No working from home - particularly ridiculous since many projects are done by people from many different locations.
Best employees are just "stuck" (H1, etc)
People work way too hard for their compensation levels
Way too many meetings.
Incompetent management
Promotions almost non-existent
Fear based culture - Dictator CEO surrounded by "yes" men rather than competent/passionate leadership

Advice to Senior ManagementReplace top leadership
Start treating people as assets - give options
Promote creativity

It would be difficult to find a worse place to work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Dublin, CA

I worked at Sybase

ProsDublin HQ is very nice. Benefits are great, but very expensive. Company has been very successful in recent past with record financial results.

ConsThe culture is very fear based and a level of paranoia I have never seen exists within the company.

CEO is involved in every decision, no matter how small Thus, employees have no ability to influence the success of the company, which makes it difficult to find meaning in your work. Compensation is well below average for the industry, and sales people are especially poorly compensated as compared to industry.

Senior Management is composed of friends and family of CEO, and thus not necessarily the best and the brightest. Old Boy's network is alive and well here. Senior Management ensures that the good old boys are taken care of financially, and the rank and file receive paltry bonuses and no salary increases. Layoffs happened regularly and salaries were frozen for >2 years despite record quarters.

Lots of employees have long tenure here, which would make one think that it's a great place to work. In reality, the long tenures exist because few other opportunities exist in the area, and many employees live in the Central Valley and cannot commute to the Valley.

Do not take a job at this company unless you are starving.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of the people who have made you succesful, and loosen up the reins on small decisions

Great company and culture

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Concord, MA

I have been working at Sybase

Pros- Agile and adaptive organization
- Top quality products
- Small enough company to create friendly atmosphere with coworkers
- Independent

Cons- Career development and growth could be better
- Compensation/raises not market rate
- Engineering driven culture can sometimes be a hindrance
- Life balance a bit out of whack due to global operations

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage more career growth and movement and remove some of the top layers.. Hire more producers as opposed to managers who don't deliver.

Good benefits, good employees, mediocre management

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Englewood, CO

I worked at Sybase

ProsSybase has excellent benefits and excellent pay. The employees are great, really good to work with and committed to getting the job done right.

ConsYou never know when the axe might fall. They layoff just about every quarter, even though they have been making record sales and profits. Management doesn't know how to make long-term plans and stick with them. They try something for a quarter and if it doesn't work, they abandon it. This leads to lots of changes in jobs and responsibilities which leads to loss of skills because you don't get to use them.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake a plan and stick with it. Either believe in a product or company that you bought, or don't acquire and then dismantle them. Listen to your employees, some of them are pretty smart and know the market.

Profitable company, poor culture

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Dublin, CA

I have been working at Sybase

Prosgood commute
nice clean building
onsite child care
onsite cafeteria and gym
some of the people are great to work with

Conscommand and control management style, often employing fear and intimidation to control employees
they hire cousins, friends, daughter's godmother, etc. so loyalty is valued much more than competence
toxic environment for people who have innovative ideas

Advice to Senior ManagementCEO needs to first replace the VP of HR, and then surround himself with people who are not yes men. There is a reason why the new blood you are hiring into the company turns around and promptly leaves. If you put good people into a bad culture, the culture will win every time, unfortunately. Never gonna make it to 2 billion that way.

Good company that needs work.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Dublin, CA

I have been working at Sybase

ProsGreat company with phenomenal benefits! Friendly people that are willing to help you. Easy commute from the East Bay, telecommuting is always an option.

ConsSometimes people get promoted to their level of incompetence. Recognition is an issue for accomplishments. Company direction is not always communicated well to the employees, leaving you wondering what your roll is in the company and what are you suppose to be doing.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have some extremely talented individuals working for you. Stop micro-managing them and let them do what they do best. Share the companies goals and direction more openly. Encourage people to get them to rally behind the company rather than badgering them into following. Some of your executive staff does not inspire confidence within the employees. In fact, they are simply not respected based upon their actions and opinions. Learn to talk with people rather than talking to them.

Marketing Programs

Staff Marketing Specialist (Former Employee)
Concord, MA

I worked at Sybase

ProsTelecommuting options, flex schedule, employee independance, different learning opportunties, great people to work with, reasonable time off options, team environment

Conspoor growth salary growth opportunties as length of service increased, poor promotion opportunties if not located in headquarters, does not support full-time telecommuting options

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at the employee contribution and not the managers contribution. Managers have a fantastic way of protecting themselves while throwing the employee under the bus. Managers have access to the decision makers when layoffs occur so they know when to cover themselves, the employees are totally focused on thier assigned tasks so they don't have the ability to prove worth.

Also share the wealth, if the company is making the most money they have ever made, give more back to those who stuck with you when the company was not doing so well.

Decent company with a bunch of great people

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Dublin, CA

I worked at Sybase

ProsGreat place to work overall. Great campus, some of the friendliest people there, even the executive team! Sybase is definitely one of the companies on the fence (in terms of success) and a lot of people are hopping on the band wagon.

ConsI was stuck at a low-entry position and had difficulty moving up. It can be a VERY politically motivated work space. It's basically "who you know" even within the company. I got to admit also, HR staff is really useless

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove the infrastructure of HR. Other than that, keep doing what you're doing, you guys are doing great!
