    Great company and culture

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Concord, MA

    Pros- Agile and adaptive organization
    - Top quality products
    - Small enough company to create friendly atmosphere with coworkers
    - Independent

Cons- Career development and growth could be better
    - Compensation/raises not market rate
    - Engineering driven culture can sometimes be a hindrance
    - Life balance a bit out of whack due to global operations

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage more career growth and movement and remove some of the top layers.. Hire more producers as opposed to managers who don't deliver.

    Profitable company, poor culture

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Dublin, CA

    Prosgood commute
    nice clean building
    onsite child care
    onsite cafeteria and gym
some of the people are great to work with

Conscommand and control management style, often employing fear and intimidation to control employees
they hire cousins, friends, daughter's godmother, etc. so loyalty is valued much more than competence
toxic environment for people who have innovative ideas

Advice to Senior ManagementCEO needs to first replace the VP of HR, and then surround himself with people who are not yes men. There is a reason why the new blood you are hiring into the company turns around and promptly leaves. If you put good people into a bad culture, the culture will win every time, unfortunately. Never gonna make it to 2 billion that way.

    Good company that needs work.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Dublin, CA

ProsGreat company with phenomenal benefits! Friendly people that are willing to help you. Easy commute from the East Bay, telecommuting is always an option.

ConsSometimes people get promoted to their level of incompetence. Recognition is an issue for accomplishments. Company direction is not always communicated well to the employees, leaving you wondering what your roll is in the company and what are you suppose to be doing.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have some extremely talented individuals working for you. Stop micro-managing them and let them do what they do best. Share the companies goals and direction more openly. Encourage people to get them to rally behind the company rather than badgering them into following. Some of your executive staff does not inspire confidence within the employees. In fact, they are simply not respected based upon their actions and opinions. Learn to talk with people rather than talking to them.

    Marketing Programs

Staff Marketing Specialist (Former Employee) Concord, MA

ProsTelecommuting options, flex schedule, employee independance, different learning opportunties, great people to work with, reasonable time off options, team environment

Conspoor growth salary growth opportunties as length of service increased, poor promotion opportunties if not located in headquarters, does not support full-time telecommuting options

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at the employee contribution and not the managers contribution. Managers have a fantastic way of protecting themselves while throwing the employee under the bus. Managers have access to the decision makers when layoffs occur so they know when to cover themselves, the employees are totally focused on thier assigned tasks so they don't have the ability to prove worth.

Also share the wealth, if the company is making the most money they have ever made, give more back to those who stuck with you when the company was not doing so well.

Decent company with a bunch of great people

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Dublin, CA

ProsGreat place to work overall. Great campus, some of the friendliest people there, even the executive team! Sybase is definitely one of the companies on the fence (in terms of success) and a lot of people are hopping on the band wagon.

ConsI was stuck at a low-entry position and had difficulty moving up. It can be a VERY politically motivated work space. It's basically "who you know" even within the company. I got to admit also, HR staff is really useless

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove the infrastructure of HR. Other than that, keep doing what you're doing, you guys are doing great!

    Good place to work.

Product Manager (Former Employee) Dublin, CA

ProsIt was a good place to work. The people were very reasonable, and everyone was a team player. There wasn't any micro-managing.

ConsIt doesn't feel like a very fast moving company. As a whole, the company is comprised mostly of older employees. They've not hired many new college grads for a while.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore than words, need to take steps to listen to the employees more, and to empower them to do their jobs.

    Place to work, indeed.

Staff Software Designer (Former Employee) Dublin, TX

ProsWorking environment is ok, just because of the colleagues. another thing is career path is ok. you will need to voice up, else no one will know if yu are happy with your current situation. that's goes to me. maybe this is human being.

Conswork work and work, that's all... and work.. we do not want to have too much of company politic in this company... employee, especially those lower position staffs suffering alot.

Advice to Senior Managementmore team building, more innovation to work, and slightly more benefit to the employee

    Financially stable place to work

Staff Software Engineer (Current Employee) Dublin, CA

Prosthe company is stable financially and seems to be on a reasonable footing going forward.

ConsThe hardest thing about working at Sybase is the expectation that the job starts at 55-60 hours a week. There is little to no innovation. The primary work is keeping current customers satisfied.

Advice to Senior ManagementAttempt to pull the regular work week down to 50 hours.

    Riding the Phoenix

    Director (Current Employee) Dublin, CA

ProsCompany is doing well and has good plans for the future. Has overcome some systemic problems and poised for long term success. Respectful work environment, strong work ethic with good opportunities for professional growth.

ConsUsual issues with "skaters" employees who are not held accountable for performance while others pick up the slack. Heavy top down management style that was necessary to get company back on track, could now impede good ideas from percolating from the workforce. Leadership hasn't grasped benefits of innovative recognition and feedback programs leading to unnecessary attrition.

Advice to Senior ManagementMoney isn't everything. Teams do work. Leadership is more than getting a title.

Good company to work for if you want to have more time with your personal life and family

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) Dublin, CA

    Proswell-established. Nice people. Excellent benefit

    Consslow growth, forced vacation, etc

Advice to Senior Managementcancel forced vacation. Maybe good for Sybase financials but definitely not good for morale
