    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe worst place I've ever worked, very poor company culture, management people always expect more than human being can handle. Need to fight very hard for promotions.

ConsThere are a lot chances for people needs more challenges, always a lot work to do.

Advice to Senior Managementrespect all employees as normal human being, not robots

    Horrible Unprofessional Cheap Management.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsGood Medical benefits.
There were some nice people working there, but that was about it.

ConsToo many jobs being sent to offshore. Horrible Indian bosses. Communication issues. jobs need to stay in the US!! Management was cheap, so cheap it cut into productivity.

Advice to Senior Management– Get rid of the offshore!! Stop sending jobs to India, people in the US need jobs to stimulate our economy and you can hire 1 American for the cost of 3 or 4 Indians who will do a better job!!

    Chicago Office

    Senior Marketing (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsNone nothing positive with this office. Worst career choice all time

ConsTerrible management led by Terry Gellerman. Phony job posting... Sybase company itself is fine but the chicago office is led by poor management, not following company's policy, no training and no career support. There are no diversity in the office and the office is poorly equipped.

Advice to Senior Managementget rid of the people in the chicago office

Dont waste your skills in this ghosttown

    Developer (Former Employee)
    Dublin, CA

ProsNone. If you enjoy afternoon naps, come late, leave early..ease going place with no work, no delivery...and everything done in China...then, Sybase is the right place for you

ConsLousy Management. Their interest is in saving their jobs outsourcing it all to Chinese, so management can get nice big paychecks. Lousy laptops or desktops, probably a decade old will be given to you to work on..No interest in employee training, progress or retaining skilled people. This is dead place...RIP...Dont make the mistake of being excited to join Sybase...The money from SAP keeps them going

Advice to Senior ManagementFire Lousy Management who have been holding their jobs for over a decade and hire some hardcore skilled developers

    Employees are taken for granted

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Dublin, CA

    ProsSome interesting projects
    Some good people

    ConsEmployees taken for granted
Expensive health plans, no stock options, vacation too short.
Bonus plans ridiculously low for rank and file. High for executives.
No working from home - particularly ridiculous since many projects are done by people from many different locations.
Best employees are just "stuck" (H1, etc)
People work way too hard for their compensation levels
    Way too many meetings.
    Incompetent management
    Promotions almost non-existent
Fear based culture - Dictator CEO surrounded by "yes" men rather than competent/passionate leadership

Advice to Senior ManagementReplace top leadership
Start treating people as assets - give options
    Promote creativity

It would be difficult to find a worse place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Dublin, CA

ProsDublin HQ is very nice. Benefits are great, but very expensive. Company has been very successful in recent past with record financial results.

ConsThe culture is very fear based and a level of paranoia I have never seen exists within the company.

CEO is involved in every decision, no matter how small Thus, employees have no ability to influence the success of the company, which makes it difficult to find meaning in your work. Compensation is well below average for the industry, and sales people are especially poorly compensated as compared to industry.

Senior Management is composed of friends and family of CEO, and thus not necessarily the best and the brightest. Old Boy's network is alive and well here. Senior Management ensures that the good old boys are taken care of financially, and the rank and file receive paltry bonuses and no salary increases. Layoffs happened regularly and salaries were frozen for >2 years despite record quarters.

Lots of employees have long tenure here, which would make one think that it's a great place to work. In reality, the long tenures exist because few other opportunities exist in the area, and many employees live in the Central Valley and cannot commute to the Valley.

Do not take a job at this company unless you are starving.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of the people who have made you succesful, and loosen up the reins on small decisions

    Profitable company, poor culture

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Dublin, CA

    Prosgood commute
    nice clean building
    onsite child care
    onsite cafeteria and gym
some of the people are great to work with

Conscommand and control management style, often employing fear and intimidation to control employees
they hire cousins, friends, daughter's godmother, etc. so loyalty is valued much more than competence
toxic environment for people who have innovative ideas

Advice to Senior ManagementCEO needs to first replace the VP of HR, and then surround himself with people who are not yes men. There is a reason why the new blood you are hiring into the company turns around and promptly leaves. If you put good people into a bad culture, the culture will win every time, unfortunately. Never gonna make it to 2 billion that way.

    For coasters

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsIf you are looking for a stable paycheck and low pressure environment this is the place for you.

ConsMust be good at playing politics to advance. Doesn't foster innovation or leadership. Sybase name not a strong resume booster. Dublin is far from SF or Silicon Valley hot spots.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a hard look why Oracle and Sybase have done so differently in the market. I think the answer lies in difference between corporate culture and people.

    Slow growth. Bad management.

    Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Pune (India)

ProsNot much stress. Good work-life balance. Sometimes the work is interesting.

ConsBad management. Lot of favouritism. Most projects are in maintenance mode. Little scope for innovation. Career path of engineers is not made clear. Goal setting is not done properly. No visibility. Most managers are settlers who clock 8 hours and leave. Unprofessional!

Advice to Senior ManagementEngage at all levels with employees. Make processes more transparent. Managers tend to bend the rules and no one seems to be aware. Give some power to the engineers. Conduct "skip level" meetings.
