I have been working at Sydney Water for more than 10 years

    Pros

Flexibility in work arrangements including working part time, from home, rosters and varying work hours. The company is large enough to offer career choice but people tend to stay in their roles for many years so promotions and career advancement can be difficult.

    Cons

The amount of paperwork, processes and bureaucratic rubbish that you have overcome to achieve anything.
    Conservative, old school managers

I worked at Sydney Water full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good working conditions. Lots of opportunities for training. Committed and talented people to work with.

    Cons

10k staff 10 years ago. 4k 5 years ago. 2k today. Getting ready to cut itself in half again. Driven by govt shareholders and regulator to keep outsourcing. Success is measured in fewer FTEs not customer outcomes, revenue or cost. Fewer and fewer movement opportunities. Three strategies in three years as leaders struggle to set a direction and get ready for open competition. A feeding frenzy for big consulting firms while internals are ignored. Structure change is constant but systems are unchanged.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop pretending to be a multinational professional services firm and get back to being Sydney's water utility. Stop relying on consultants to do the thinking. Start being honest with your people about the medium to long term future of the organisation. Where you say you are going is not where you are heading.

I have been working at Sydney Water full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Work-life balance - can get a 9 day fortnight
Pay - some areas are overpaid
Growth - there is a lot of opportunity to move around, especially laterally. This is fantastic if you are looking to broaden your skill set/resume or make a career change.

    Cons

Slow moving & Bureaucratic - lots of approval requirements due to conservative and ex-government nature
Unequal benefits and opportunities - if you progress, get perks, how you are scored, if your projects succeed is often determined by who is in your network and what your background is rather than your performance.
Location - based in parramatta. It is ok, there are food options and gyms around but it takes a long time to get to via public transport and there is no free parking.

    I worked at Sydney Water

    Pros

If you are part of Sydney water you are well looked after. Experts exist in all different engineering teams. Different types of works within water industry can be experienced.

    Cons

Even though there are different types of roles, you can't always get varied experience through different teams because you don't possess initial background or experience in other roles. Not really interchangeable for further development. Now it's more like specialising rather than general engineering or project management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You guys provide good mentoring. HR is not really helpful. I don't know why they exist

    I worked at Sydney Water

    Pros

It was a great company to work for once.

    Cons

The incumbent CIO has destroyed the IT division.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the CIO and his yes men. Get someone in who has some people skills and can implement something i.e. Someone like another Tim Catley

I have been working at Sydney Water full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great Strategy trying to move in the right direction. Some really good change agents that are trying to make a difference and get things done.

    Cons

Too slow to change and too weak to fire those old non performers. Managers precise not communicating changes or reasoning behind them to staff and jots focused on consulting with unions without consulting with the staff themselves

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Finish restructuring and stop being afraid to act.

I have been working at Sydney Water full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Good Work Life Balance
    Fortnightly RDO's
    Very good helpful workforce
Fairly flexible on start and end working hours in most areas of the business
    Can take long holidays

    Cons

    Travel to Parramatta
People management needs improvement across divisions
Senior managers do not role model as good leaders
Their is a culture of bullying and a huge issue of trust

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management do not communicate well, they are not transparent and do not role model key behaviours. There is alot of favouritism, performance management is poor and subjective. Leadership is poor and not respected. There is no follow through with development opportunties and key learnings

I have been working at Sydney Water full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Fortnightly rostered days off. Paid overtime. 20 days sick leave that roll over.

    Cons

Inequality, difficult to progress in your career path. It might be privatised in the not too distant future and there are a lot of people being made redundant.
