I worked at Sydney Water full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Nice building in Parramatta
Some very good passionate people hold this place together
    Highly paid staff

    Cons

    Bullying Culture
    Poor Management across all levels
    Staff overpaid for work done
    Entitlement culture

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat bullying culture seriously (especially in HR) Terminate those who exhibit poor behaviours and those that dont perform. Have an independent assess the organisation and have all staff including the executive apply for their roles again.

I worked at Sydney Water full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Flexible work hours
    Nine-day fortnight
    Fitness classes at head office
Opportunities to work in different roles and in different parts of the company.
The opportunity to work with people from diverse backgrounds and with diverse skill sets
Delivering an essential resource that makes modern life possible
Being part of the story of our great city

    Cons

    Negative workplace culture
    A culture of bullying
    Inadequate penalties for inappropriate behaviour
    Inadequate recognition for high achievers
Conflict of interest not dealt with appropriately
Promotions/awards based on favouritism rather than achievement
Negative attitudes towards change (even if for the better)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not permit conflicts of interest - employees should not be working under their relatives in management
Take workplace bullying seriously- stop denying the problem and blaming the victims
Training in appropriate workplace behaviour must be followed up with disciplinary action for those that don't comply
Consider an awards scheme based on achievement rather than nomination
Start making Sydney Water a safe environment for employees to contribute their talents

    Pros

IT Strategy looks good on paper but has not made any significant difference. Plenty of opportunity if you agree with current management and do not want to have your opinion valued in a respectful manner.

    Cons

IT management have thrown out a lot of good (people, process, technology) in trying to implement a new strategy.
People no longer feel respected by IT Executive. Colleagues have said that it is no longer a friendly workplace in IT.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get people skills.

    Pros

Liverpool contact centre tries to hide behind the awards and accolades but behind the doors there is a leader a manager who exits who is a poor peoples person a dictator

    Cons

Staff refer to the contact centre as the chokey, poor leadership from managers, you have team managers who do nothing but look good and attend meetings which do not add any value, definitely no flexibility - do not mention that you want to go on part time as you are offered the exit door as many have done, nothing positive to say!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Sydney Water (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexibility in work arrangements including working part time, from home, rosters and varying work hours. The company is large enough to offer career choice but people tend to stay in their roles for many years so promotions and career advancement can be difficult.

    Cons

The amount of paperwork, processes and bureaucratic rubbish that you have overcome to achieve anything.
    Conservative, old school managers

I worked at Sydney Water full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good working conditions. Lots of opportunities for training. Committed and talented people to work with.

    Cons

10k staff 10 years ago. 4k 5 years ago. 2k today. Getting ready to cut itself in half again. Driven by govt shareholders and regulator to keep outsourcing. Success is measured in fewer FTEs not customer outcomes, revenue or cost. Fewer and fewer movement opportunities. Three strategies in three years as leaders struggle to set a direction and get ready for open competition. A feeding frenzy for big consulting firms while internals are ignored. Structure change is constant but systems are unchanged.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop pretending to be a multinational professional services firm and get back to being Sydney's water utility. Stop relying on consultants to do the thinking. Start being honest with your people about the medium to long term future of the organisation. Where you say you are going is not where you are heading.

I worked at Sydney Water full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Liverpool Contact Centre shines itself from awards but the roots of that place is truly not an employer of choice. I would have to say that it was the worse place I worked for. There is nothing good about working there at all with leaders who are appointed to their roles with no people skills, coaching skills but intimidate staff. You get more flexibility and acknowledgement from smaller organsations. They truly need help. Would not recommend anyone.

    Cons

Leaders who are appointed with no leadership experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A restructure or major revamp is needed to excel the old and bring in the new.

I have been working at Sydney Water full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Work-life balance - can get a 9 day fortnight
Pay - some areas are overpaid
Growth - there is a lot of opportunity to move around, especially laterally. This is fantastic if you are looking to broaden your skill set/resume or make a career change.

    Cons

Slow moving & Bureaucratic - lots of approval requirements due to conservative and ex-government nature
Unequal benefits and opportunities - if you progress, get perks, how you are scored, if your projects succeed is often determined by who is in your network and what your background is rather than your performance.
Location - based in parramatta. It is ok, there are food options and gyms around but it takes a long time to get to via public transport and there is no free parking.
