Pros
Never lacked for tools or resources to get my job done; Symc always willing to send me to classes; talented and dedicated colleagues. I was always proud to say that I worked at Symantec, bringing world-class Norton products to the masses.
Cons
Nimble, they are not. Symc is very process-driven and they operate with minimal staff. Because of this, it was extremely difficult and time-consuming to get simple stuff done.
Advice to Senior Management
Hire some people... you have a good number of really talented, devoted employees who are overworked and underappreciated. Nobody wants to work 50-60 hours per week ALL THE TIME.
Pros
My hiring manager gave me a great opportunity and salary
The company supported work life balance and telecommuting
Unfortunately I was moved to work under two other managers within the next 12 months
Cons
Poor leadership in middle management
Bad communication
Pros
it has a very good culture, great products, and good benefits. Overall the company is focused on growth and is dynamic.
Cons
It focuses too much on being inclusive to the extent that it hurts aggressive and new thinking. Also, relationships matter way more than they should at times.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on hiring the best people for the job and not who have been around and have good relationships. Be aggressive and make bold moves...in general gun shy approach doesnt work.
Pros
* Good people who are talented and smart generally
* Flexible work environment and good remote working program
* A company that is trying to make a positive different in the world through online security
Cons
* I did not see a lot of people move up, only sideways at best in the org
* People often identify with the company they came from (e.g. Verisign, Veritas, etc.) and not Symantec even after a very long time
* Some product groups are not innovating fast enough
* This vision and strategy is often right on, but execution lags
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on executing your strategy and having something to deliver in accordance. The lag between announcing a vision and starting to deliver is to long and hurts credibility.
Pros
Socially and environmentally responsible company; many opportunities if you are organizationally aware and are a top performer
Cons
Nothing that any large company doesn't bring to the table.
Advice to Senior Management
Enterprise support has lost nearly all credibility for most products. Stop "dumbing down" support, stop shipping support jobs overseas and hire qualified individuals. Feedback from roundtable discussions with the support engineers may surprise the executive leadership.
Pros
work-life balance is good. Probably depends on your manager. Good benefits. Many opportunities to challenge yourself and learn about technology
Cons
Wish they have a work from home program.
Advice to Senior Management
Overall a good place to work.
Pros
Security based
Great benefits
Very smart people
Cons
Communication of vision
Communication to employees on org changes
Not as agile as a smaller company
Advice to Senior Management
Let your employees know what is going on.
Pros
good learning opportunities...new technologies...talented people to work with....good infrastructure...lot of facilities...free lucnh & breakfast..exposure to latest technology
Cons
work-life balance totally screwed up atleast for some business units...management lacks clarity of vision..difficult to perform simplet tasks..as the softwares keep changing
Advice to Senior Management
have a more clear vision ...focus on core things...be better at people management....provide a better work life balance
Pros
Fast paced work environment. at Symantec
Cons
Lots of challenges in core business and no clear way out. Benefits are average. Work life balance is difficult for managers.
Pros
good work culture, market leading technology and decent pay. If you are in good team, you go places.
Cons
No career path, getting stagnant in work.
Advice to Senior Management
instead of always painting a perfect rosy picture, accept the facts as facts.
