I have been working at Symantec full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

One of the finest people in the world. A great culture.
    Superb work-life balance.
    Relatively lesser politics.
    Freedom to learn and grow.
    Cutting-edge legacy products.
    Great technical community.
Very good facilities though deteriorating off late.

    Cons

Veritas was acquired by Symantec in 2005 and since then it has been an unhappy marriage of sorts. The company, barring a few instances, has gone from bad to worst. Layoffs are annual affair. Detoriation and reduction of services and facilities are the norm. First line managers are no better than high school graduates. Neither good in people management nor in technology. All they are expected is to maintain word and excel sheets to track the to-dos and hound people by incessant follow-ups.

Completely clueless management and higher leadership.
    Messed up strategy.
    Demotivated rank and file.
Lost opportunities in new product development.

Former Employee - Associate SQA Engineer  in  Pune (India)
Former Employee - Associate SQA Engineer in Pune (India)

I worked at Symantec full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Was hired as a automation engineer for the testing team in SAMG. Mostly friendly welcoming people, passionate about their work. They give you time flexible enough to study and learn their systems, as there is no formal training for entry level engineers. In my team, at least, there was never any pressure from the peers and immediate manager for the task assigned on hand. You're always welcomed to try new technologies and give innovative suggestions.

    Good facilities -
Free food(breakfast, lunch and dinner), gym, recreational room.

    Cons

Way too much shuffling at higher management level. There were no long term plans set for our team and the current goals were a bit fuzzy to say the least. I saw my immediate manager change thrice during my time of 2.5 years there. Work also stagnates after a while, but this may depend on the team you are in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set long term goals for your team. Keep a single-minded philosophy, even if there is change at the higher level of management.

I have been working at Symantec full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Good worklife balance. Most teams allow work from home. Good leave benefits and flexible work hours.
    - Diverse technologies to work on.
    - Smart and friendly people. Senior folks including the senior most managers are extremely approachable.

    Cons

    - Slow career growth,
    - Broken processes. Some technologies being used for day-to-day work are outdated
    - Too many org changes, with not a clear defined roadmap for some products.
    - Since recently, switching teams based on your interest has become tough
    - Compensation and hikes not up to the mark
    - Last few years have seen perks reduced drastically
    - Least bothered HR. Surveys are frequent but don't seem to be considered

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Require some stability in Management. Symantec offered good perks to employees few years back. Bring them back and preserve the culture.
