There is high turnover at the management and above level and organizational changes at least every 1 1/2 years.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits. Opportunity to work remotely. Excellent work life balance

    Cons

With all of the changes employees are continuously having to justify their position. Once they are in established with new leadership and looking for growth opportunities changes are made and new leadership comes in and you have to start all over.
Projects get started and then fizzle because of changes.
I had 8 managers in the 7 years I worked there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Establish a strategy and stick with it. If changes need to be made work with existing team do not bring in new people.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some good people who want to do the right thing. Products are good but focus on selling the company, reducing budgets and head count is new priority.

    Cons

No leadership. Teams not working while "plans" are being made for over a year. Promotions going to those who will put up with the situation verses being qualified.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to basics. You're overwhelmed and make changes based on what CAN be done vs what SHOULD be done. Careful with who you are promoting.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

your work/life balance will not suffer, even while you are at work!
you will get paid regularly, every 2 weeks!
you will have plenty of meetings, and right before review time, an avalanche of TOI's to attend, all keeping you from doing realy work!
you might see your manager eating in the SymCafe.. twice in the same morning !!
tons of interesting people to chat with all day, because doing real work is a bummer, and is meant for the higher-paid guys who've been here longer.
    People are nice!
You will be graded on your customer service skills!
Don't have any techincal skills, or, problem solving skills? Not a problem at Symantec, just email *ALL, and, somebody will give you the answer.
Management surprises you two weeks before your review by publishing previously unheard of standards you were supposed to follow all year! Surprise!!!!!!
There are no problems at Symantec! Everything is great! Everyday!
There are lots of managers to talk to all day!

    Cons

Bummer, sometimes you'll have to signup for a weekend.
There is plenty of published available training ready for your perusal 24/7 if you want to learn something about what you are supposed to do when customer's call - But you have to read this on your own.. bummer.
There are some really technologically advanced, major operators running the whole organization, I wonder what they do all day?? hmmm....
    Cafe closes at 1:30pm.
management seems like a body of people going through the motions, riding desks, going to endless meetings, accomplishing nothing in terms of creating a better work culture, opening future opportunities, and getting best results out of their direct reports.
It feels like working at a post office, don't get excited, the work will get done somehow, go eat a salad.
this is that place where promotions are doled out to sunny personalities, rather than true performers
you will be thanked to death: from new C-level employees, management, other peers, but not rewarded; It seems management has a limited vocabulary consisting of making excuses or saying "Thanks"
Inexplicable hiring decisions, not based on candidate's aptitude
values are something to be repeated, and never acted upon during your day to day work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

retire, you have made Symantec a directionless busywork colony steeped in court etiquette

Good compensation, good benefits, good life work balance

    Cons

No clear path for training and advancement. Constant CEO changes are fatal to employees and innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

My paycheck seems to come on a regular basis ...

    Cons

Company suffers from massive management heavy structure. More "Chiefs than Indians". Constantly shifting org restructuring. The usual BS about big companies, they lie out one side of their mouth to the employees, and then do something different.

They constantly change the bonus structure to insure that Sr. level Execs get their dough when times are tough, and the worker bees get the shaft.

Stock options are precious, far and few in between, and never really worth much.

They waste money on big gambles, but pinch pennies on the stuff that matters and empowers employees to be able to do their job. Like pens and pencils. Or a stapler for goodness sake. Worse, the corporate LAN sucks so bad and is constantly dropping off that you can't get much done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get fired, asap - you're basically useless, destroying the company, and need to get out of the way of the engineers and people actually doing the work.
