I worked at Symantec full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Friendly, small company feel (Norton team)

    Cons

Long timers are waiting to move up, and usually do ahead of new blood. So promotion too heavily weighted towards length of service rather than being a true meritocracy. Senior management slow to react to changing market conditions, which resulted in market share rapidly being lost on desktop and mobile strategy was spray, pray and as a result ineffective.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Break it up into smaller more agile companies.

Former Employee - Senior Principal Software Engineer

I worked at Symantec full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Interesting work for an engineer & a smattering of smart people who care deeply about solving problems. Not much internal competition, and the culture is generally about 'nice' so day to day life is pretty easy.

    Cons

Kind of like the Lazy T ranch, not much urgency or drive in much of the company. Lots of smart people showing up, typing a little into their computers, and then going home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Well, management has had a lot of turnover lately, so any advice to management would be lost pretty quickly :)

A company in the right industry (Cyber Security) but that lack proper leadership to hit its potential

I have been working at Symantec full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work flexibility (in some groups / departments)
    On-site Cafeteria (very good food)
    Facilities are good
    Markets with potential

    Cons

Culture vacuum: since the firing of Steve Bennett (previous CEO), there is no clear direction or attention as to where the culture and values of the company are heading.
Compensation is not great (they usually aim at the low-end of the industry benchmark when hiring) and promotions are really scarce.
Whatever is being considered (initiatives, projects, etc), it takes forever to get things done, if done at all. That is something that is really amazing for a high-tech company in a fast pace and changing environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your acts together: change/transformation is good up to a point. After that, it becomes Chaos. And firing a respected and true leader (Steve Bennett) at the beginning of a turn-around for no reason (at least publicly) does not help being credible with employees and most likely customers and investors.
Also, get some respect for employees and stop serving us some external-PR-type (= BS) communication.

I have been working at Symantec full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great co-workers, benefits and working environment.

    Cons

current driving force is a overly conservative CFO and interim CEO. Too much change at once and changes are driving down moral with little response. Not the same culture from 5 years ago.

    Pros

Very talented set of engineers in the corresponding field.

    Cons

    Totally Clueless management.
Management style is more like "throw the mud and see if it sticks".

I have been working at Symantec full-time for more than a year

    Pros

People are intelligent, pay is good. My interview process was pretty non-technical and laid back. Travel is available if you have a geographically diverse team, or an important project.

    Cons

CEO uncertainty often, everyone wants to build everything themselves instead of using an existing solution, budget issues are everywhere. We have to jump through hoops to get hardware.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is good, but the architects seem to give too much free reign to engineers in system design. The result is sloppy, or inflexible design.
