I worked at Symantec full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

They have the big 6. Decent base, bonus, stock, ESPP, 401k, and decent benefits

    Cons

Annual layoffs until finally shipping the entire project offshore. Putting a project into maintenance mode means those left get to bandaid aging technology

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep it up. Squeezing blood from turnips works

Not really different from other tech companies

I have been working at Symantec full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pay and benefits are competitive but not outstanding
The work is challenging and interesting.
Tremendously talented people - some of the smartest engineers.

    Cons

Unstable management over the last 2 years - instability has led to some negative employee morale
Change can be good, particularly in this industry, but Symantec's executive management changes haven't been made for positive reasons. Almost seems more like infighting.

I worked at Symantec full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Compensation is good.
Work-life balance is the best part
Flexible timings and WFH allowed in most teams
Best for engineers that do not upgrade their skills and have no intention to grow / learn.

    Cons

    Benefits could be better
Office environment / facilities could be better
Uncertainty, layoffs can hit you anytime
Too many top executive departures creating leadership vaccum at the top

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick to a plan, portfolio and management team, and give them time to deliver.

I worked at Symantec full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good Salary and benefits. Smart people.

    Cons

Zero innovation. There are many people that have been there way too long. "This is how we have always done things' is a common refrain. The Product team hates the Technology teams, the Technology Teams think they know everything. QA is an afterthought. In general there in no cohesive team effort. Everyone is fighting for their own little kingdom and ultimately the product and the customers lose.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow people with vision and experience in large scale Consumer Product organizations to enter the leadership ranks. Be willing to make changes to the culture.

I worked at Symantec full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Many great, talented people. Compensation and benefits are equal to other top tier Silicon Valley companies. Superior facilities and working environment.

    Cons

Symantec has suffered for years with constant management changes, reorganizations, reductions in force and strategy shifts. The Sr. and C level leadership culture is highly political and solves for their individual results rather than cross-functionally. The 2014 departure of CEO Steve Bennet, following the firing of his predecessor two years earlier continues to reflect management discord. Each management change results in new strategy, priorities, trickle down reorganizations and employee attrition.

I have been working at Symantec

    Pros

Good schedules, fair compensation, good benefits, and tuition reimbursement for courses relating to your job.

    Cons

Too much change in the last few years, they have had two CEO's in just a few years, and shifting priorities from that. They also seem to layoff people for odd reasons, such as being geographically inconvenient.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize your talent, if you already have good people working for you, why do you let so many of them go?

I have been working at Symantec

    Pros

Good work life balance. Good product portfolio. Good architects who know products very well. Ethical company. Good benefits and charity matching program.

    Cons

Too many leadership changes. Have lost all of business leaders in last two years. Company is drifting without any vision or direction.

I have been working at Symantec as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

There are a lot of career opportunities here. Working in Talent Acquisition there are a lot of open requisitions, especially in the Cloud Platform Engineering group. Lots of training opportunities as well.

    Cons

Too many upper management and senior level changes. Interim CEO.....changes at the senior level.....too much instability. No clear message on direction of the company from the top. Until the new CEO is in place, it feels like you're on a deserted island.
