    Pros

Great vacation if you live in Fort McMurray and benefits, great retirement package. Good place for co-op students.

Min training and career growth, live in Isolated town with not much to do can become depressing at times

I have been working at Syncrude

    Pros

Great overall compensation, great opportunity to move around to different departments and roles. Vacation time is quite generous from the start.

    Cons

Fewer options for locations. Other companies are shifting positions to Calgary or offering fly-in, fly-out but Syncrude is staying Fort Mac-centric with a few jobs elsewhere.

I have been working at Syncrude full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great pay, great atmosphere, safe, free coach bus to and from work, car rental discounts and other corporate deals. They were willing to fly me from Ontario at the beginning of my term and back at the end, as well as providing housing for all students.

    Cons

The commute is a long drive, although you are free to sleep through the whole thing. Living in Fort McMurray is not for everyone.

Current Employee - QA/QC Inspector in Fort McMurray, AB (Canada)

I have been working at Syncrude full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Relaxed office atmosphere, great benefits package, supportive leaders, flexible work schedule (if you ask for it and have proved your worth), lots of OT, plenty of training available (internal & external), corporate business travel within Alberta, ability to learn and see a variety of things in a short period of time.

    Cons

Average compensation for the Fort McM urray region, ExxonMobil management (limits and/or reducing advancement opportunities for Syncrude employees by often embedding their own). Under performing (and often under qualified) contractors are compensated well above Syncrude employees resulting in high turn over of employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase compensation to become more competitive with regional employers, consider fly in/fly out program for employees and demand the same level of education for contractors.
