    Pros

Interesting and important work in agricultural biotechnology: opportunity to create crops with improved characteristics that can feed more people using less land, less water, and less-toxic chemicals.

    Cons

British management has no vision or will to make biotechnology work. Unnecessary bureaucracy. Nobody listens to the scientists.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the scientists, not so much to each other and your paid consultants.

A mixed bag -- good science in a byzantine environment

I have been working at Syngenta Biotechnology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great science and really outstanding scientists. We have fantastic chemists and remarkable biologists, and this remarkable range from breeders to process chemists to genomics folks -- it can be very stimulating.

The company is also extremely international, so not only can there be quite a bit of travel there's ample opportunity to really get to know people from different national backgrounds (primarily European, but activities in Asia, South America and to a lesser extent Africa are ramping up rapidly)

    Cons

The company is Swiss, huge, bureaucratic and frustrating. Ultimately the goal is feeding the planet, but decision making is incredibly complex, and it seems like there are entire departments whose only job is to make your job harder for you to do successfully.

    Advice to Management

Go big or go home. This attitude of "we can't afford to compete with Monsanto on R&D" is a self fulfilling prophecy. R&D is the company's future. Fund it that way.

    Pros

The benefits are a little better than those of the competitors, but not that much better. Vacation time is easy to come and go as you please and unlimited sick time are nice.

    Cons

The low pay in comparison to the competition in the area. Also promotions are hard to come by. Continually changing managers and not backfilling people who move on for "Career Development" are disheartening.

    Advice to Management

Syngenta believes that they have the best benefits around but in a recent speech the upper management stated that the loss of people about 10 percent at this site was due to career development, and that we actually gained 4 people. This was an ovious attempt at upper management to feel better about themselves. With that many people leaving for that reason they obviously have a probelm with developing their people. If they wanted to cut payroll it might have been advisable to lay off people other than letting the people leave on their own. The more technical employees are leaving and the less technical employees are staying.

    Pros

People and work life balance, excellent scientific opportunities, time off and flexible work arrangements are leading in industry, collaborative spirit. Highly recommend the company.

    Cons

Lack of career advancement, has a culture of apathy, lack of connection to the overall business mission, at times feels like an academic environment rather than a business driven culture.

    Advice to Management

Continued focus on employee work life is highly appreciated. However the opportunity for advancement needs to be evaualated. There are many talented people stuck below a glass ceiling. This is a loss of competitive advantage as these people are moving to your competition.
