I have been working at Synopsys full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Exposure to leading edge semiconductor technologies and circuit design.

Synopsys is the most financially sound EDA company, and the caliber of co-workers is high.

    Cons

Limited career growth and below average job satisfaction due to the highly reactive nature of a career in EDA. This isn't specific to Synopsys, though. It is characteristic of the EDA industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Aid employees in finding career development opportunities.

The salary structure is a mystery. Even if your product group exceeds revenue goals the annual bonus / incentive pay is unpredictable.

Mgmt is aware of employees' hard work and over-time hours. Proactively reward / recognize employees' accomplishments rather than wait for them to resign from Synopsys.

I have been working at Synopsys full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The company has strong financials and is the market leader in most areas of the industry. They sometimes maintain this leadership through acquisitions but do a good job of integrating new companies and technologies. In general the staff is intelligent, hard working and customer focused.

    Cons

Legacy products and bureaucratic tracking systems can make it difficult to satisfy customer requirements. The development and support teams are global, requiring many late evening meetings which can interfere with work/life balance.

I have been working at Synopsys full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Stable, pays well. Generally pleasant environment. Good place to hide out in a downturn. Reasonable location for commuting.

    Cons

Aging and non-mobile management structure in Silicon Valley, younger employees and expansion seems to be mostly in Asia. Limited scope for upward mobility. Business units conflict rather than complement. No vision for EDA (continually fighting last battle). Multiple overlaps in BU functionality. Insufficient technical expertise in management leads to "analysis paralysis". No internal leadership, only respond to customers - reactive not proactive.
Sorely missing real software architects and EDA methodology people - lots of missed opportunities.

I worked at Synopsys full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    1. Stable
    2. Powerful so only valuable and meaningful user requests can be passed to RDs to implement
    3. Follow software development process, including, spec, architecture review, code review and testing
    4. RDs can focus on software development. Unlike some small companies, some RDs need to do customer support as well.

    Cons

    1. Many managers
    2. Too many meetings

    Pros

Largest company in the field, job is pretty much secure. You don't get lots of work to do as the products are pretty stable, which means good work-life balance. Okay compensation.

    Cons

No lunch/dinner. Little hope to get promoted. Higher level folks tend to be bossy and you do not have too many chances of making decisions.

I have been working at Synopsys full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very stable company with excellent financial base. Aart has been CEO since he founded the company in 1986 so also provides consistent leadership - no surprises. Great people - very smart and engaging. In semiconductor industry there's always something new to learn. Plenty of opportunities for travel. Good flex time benefits for vacation and sick leave.

    Cons

Company has inconsistent career development opportunities. Engineering career ladder is pretty formal and there is an annual promotion opportunity to staff and principal engineer. However, for other roles it's left to the whims of your senior executive and manager to make the effort to file paperwork and fight for a promotion. In many cases, there is just no opportunity unless someone leaves the company or retires and that can take many years.
Benefits and fun factor has left the company - HR is more focused on cutting costs and making sure everyone passes the annual ethics training than helping to create a fun work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring back the motivation and fun to the company - this place is tired and old, not a good place to recruit the next generation.

I worked at Synopsys full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay. Opportunities for advancement. Exciting technical work. Leading edge of technology. CEO is a very dynamic and personable guy.

    Cons

Synopsys is a "Frankenstein's Monster" of acquistions. Sometimes the acquired do not play so well together and management treats them like children, locking them in a room and letting them "work it out" on their own.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time on integration and alignment. Management should look at what they are acquiring and clearly define an integration path and strategy.

I worked at Synopsys full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good things - decent pay, decent physical work environment (cubicles), relevant to electronics industry, good upper management, not too much pressure - good work/life balance

    Cons

Rent-seeking mentality, mediocre middle managers, not much room for career advancement, pay is only ok. The industry is overall not expanding and not very exciting. High expectations but limited support. Very rigid corporate environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Encourage more risk taking
