Former Employee – worked at Synthes full-time

Pros – I worked in sustaining engineering and so I saw many different projects and products. Most engineers focus on a single region of the body, but I was able to get my hands on projects from multiple different anatomical groups.

Cons – Some of the work was tedious but none of it seemed to be purely busy work as one may sometimes expect for a co-op position.

Advice to Senior Management – My manager was absolutely amazing. He was always very busy, but made certain the co-ops felt at home, useful, and appreciated.

- Leader in trauma segment of orthopedic products
- Their training programs for employees and surgeons are well designed and executed

Cons – - Typical 'sales force driven' business strategies; not much of innovation happening there
- Very 'male dominant' management teams

Advice to Senior Management – Be innovative....!

Cons – Promotions can be difficult - tend to compare each employee to "box" description

Pros – Incredibly interesting medical device design and development.
Directly benefits the health and wellness of hundreds of thousands of patients every year.
Large profit margins allow for freedom and flexibility in the design process.

Cons – A flat organization with little opportunity for promotion within a technical or management track.
Incredibly lean product development environment with too many projects per engineer.
Very conservative (and slow) approach to quality systems and their new product development system.

Cons – Untrustworthy management. Was lied to for years. No personal time.

Advice to Senior Management – These reps sacrifice their marriages and family for this job, you should at least respect them.

Pros – Strong company, great pay, strong managment,

Cons – Horrible work/family balance. If your worth anything as a consultants and your doc depend on you your work/ family balance will be poor. This is the typical reason for the turnaround and burn rate on sales reps.

Advice to Senior Management – No advice to management, i felt both the managers i worked for in central florida and south florida where great individuals strong in all aspects of management, and very fair. I learned alot from them. I would always recommend working at Synthes.

Cons – Territories and potential customers are getting smaller and smaller which makes growth extremely challenging.
