I worked at Synthes full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

High commissions before merger, consultants are treated with respect and supported very well.

    Cons

Slow response to surgeon needs. New technology slow to market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have no complaints. Was a bit of a good old boy deal in upper management, but didn't really affect me in the field.

  2.

I hated Synthes. Culture old school, boys club in management, people were promoted based on tenure not talent. If you suggest change the answer is usually 'we've always done it this way'. Frustrating.

I have been working at Synthes as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

    C levels get everything possible

    Cons

Operational Staff average at best. Lacking innovation. Forced FDA action has stopped the company dean in its tracks. Tap and die shop unable to transform into high tech med device company. Swiss operations work from 19th century standards.

I worked at Synthes as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Near my mother in NJ, 83, and my two sisters and three brothers. Flew home every other weekend.

    Cons

Third party, Maetrics, fairly new, or on-site personnel anyway, to the industry.

I have been working at Synthes full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Challenging work. Excellent benefits. Highly professional staff.

    Cons

Too much of a cultural shift after the acquisition. Layoffs occurred for the first time in the company's history. Morale at an all time low. People leaving in large numbers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of the veteran employees first.

    Pros

I am no longer employed by the company

    Cons

Ineffective management, lack of team environment, legal team in-fighting. I actually witnessed a verbal altercation between the CEO and the GC.

    Former Employee - Co-Op

    I worked at Synthes full-time

    Pros

I worked in sustaining engineering and so I saw many different projects and products. Most engineers focus on a single region of the body, but I was able to get my hands on projects from multiple different anatomical groups.

    Cons

Some of the work was tedious but none of it seemed to be purely busy work as one may sometimes expect for a co-op position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My manager was absolutely amazing. He was always very busy, but made certain the co-ops felt at home, useful, and appreciated.

I have been working at Synthes full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Fair- to- very good products
    - Leader in trauma segment of orthopedic products
    - Their training programs for employees and surgeons are well designed and executed

    Cons

    - Typical 'sales force driven' business strategies; not much of innovation happening there
    - Very 'male dominant' management teams

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be innovative....!

Now that you are under the JnJ umbrella, it would be interesting to see how the DePuy-Synthes marriage plays out...!
