Former Employee - Human Resources Intern in Houston, TX

I worked at Sysco as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Hourly Pay - Can't really beat what they paid me for my time throughout the internship.
Culture - Really great culture that is being fostered at the Corporate (and Share Business Services) office(s). People are usually willing to help interns learn.

    Cons

Everyone is really busy a lot of the time. You really have to manage your own time around their time if you want to meet with them. That being said, that just means you need to practice your time management skills.

    Employees are respectful and helpful
    Nice Scheduling

    Cons

Manegment lies to you about the comapny disclosure
( Casual employee ) if they offer you dont take it. You can have as little as hours or ZERO work.
When on casual status the union takes your money and gives you ZERO rights.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dont give emplyees Casual status and make sure the emplyee is aware of your rights. DO NOT APPLY TO MOUNDS VIEW SYSCO. Horible management and they lie to you and treat you like your not an employee.

I have been working at Sysco (more than an year)

    Pros

Most of the people are great to work with; of course you have the occassional person who is miserable in their own like so they have to make yours too. Aside from that, there is a gym on campus as well as a cafeteria/grill that offers several different foods to eat.

    Cons

Management might be busy but it's important to treat others with respect and learn how to listen and adddress any issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't let a dollar sign encourage you or force you to ignore the reason why we work for Sysco. Be sure to treat the customer with respect and to EXPECT that from your employees; even the ones who sell a ton of product.

I have been working at Sysco (more than an year)

    Pros

    Large, stable organization
A great place to grow your career if you land in the right group
    Great location

    Cons

    Inexperienced Management
Lack of structured training process for new associates
Lack of Consistency in Employment Practices
Failure to properly address employee concerns
    Low compensation
    Mediocre benefits
    Lack of work-life balance
    Lack of structure and processes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Exercise consistent employment practices and listen to your employees. Teach leaders how to communicate the vision and get buy in from their teams. Remove ineffective leaders and review the results of your exit interviews. Look for trends that are causing high attrition. Sysco has the potential to be a great place to work if some of these concerns addressed.

    Pros

good stable company, good management on site.

    Cons

There is no loyalty anymore, upper management does not get into the details. too many layers of management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

look at your HR programs, they are killing us.......... We spend too much money on projects that dont work and no one is held accountable. i know everyone is focused on other things but it would be nice to see a report card on all senior management. Too many senior management are being paid for sub-par work. Take a survey on just senior and executive management and see what you get for results.
