I have been working at Systemax full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Very professional, knowledgeable co-workers, who are dedicated to contributing to the success of an incredibly diverse company. There are many long term employees of 10, 20 years. Compensation and perks are great! Comprehensive Medical insurance coverage is offered and can included dental and eye coverage, if desired. Discounts are provided for non-smokers. 401k provides a generous employer "match". On-site gym, business casual dress code, Friday "jeans" and welcoming atmosphere add to the positive working environment. Innovative technology and proprietary software add to a positive work experience. Good location, headquartered on the North Shore of Long Island. Close to all.

    Cons

Medical Insurance Benefits cost (premiums and out of pocket) is higher than expected, but there are more than 2 choices to choose from and most doctors are included in the "in-network" less expensive plan. Additionally, there is a bare-bones "afordable care act" plan that provides the least expensive option. I would not call any of these plans "Cadillac" plans, as out of pocket expenses can be as high as deductible each year, in addition to the premium. A 61 day waiting period is long - and depending when you begin employment can be 2 months and 3 weeks!

I have been working at Systemax full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Nice coworkers for the most part. Having a hard time thinking of anything else.

    Cons

I'll start with the condition of the facility. The building is full of mold. Everyone coughs, sneezes and is sick all the time. Bathrooms and kitchen have no hot water, ever, even after running the faucet for 15-20 minutes. Pay is so poor and nobody seems to care much whether they get your monthly bonus paid out or not. Benefits leave me with crazy high out of pocket expenses from monthly premiums to copays and the bills that are leftover. Company pays for almost nothing. For the first time in my life even things like short term disability have to be paid by me. They do their best to find any excuse not to pay you the money you actually earn in Spiffs. Management only sees the bottom line and you can be sure they're not thinking of the people who do the work that makes them successful. Everything management does is designed to get the most work out of you with absolutely no reward including adequate compensation. There is much micromanagement in all departments and the reps aren't taught how to build their business, build relationships with their customers so future business can be counted on, they are taught to get that sale, close it and move on to the next one. One manager has been overheard telling a rep to stop wasting time on a customer and move on to someone who will buy something today. The technology infrastructure is a joke. Nothing works, systems are always either down or simply lack the functionality to get the job done. The order entry/search for part numbers/quote system is nowhere near adequate. Reps and product champions spend half their day having to deal with system issues. Reps are expected to handle all aspects of their account management from the initial conversations to quote and order placement but it doesn't stop there. It's a rep's responsibility to do collections and handle the inadequate accounting department to make sure that their customers can even get an invoice for an order placed. Management tells you they have a good work/life balance and they go as far as to tell you everything is OK if you have a medical issue that requires some out of office time but then they turn around and call you on the carpet for that time they had previously told you is OK. Nothing in your personal life matters to them and if you're sick you still better find a way to be at the office. Honestly this is just a retail store company with a pretend Business to Business division on the side. They devote almost no resources to the actual development and success of the Business to Business and in fact seem to do everything they can to thwart it's growth while at the same time beating up everyone who works in Business to Business for not hitting their unrealistic goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shut down the Business to Business division of your crap company or start paying your employees what they earn. Stop lying to those who interview with you just to get them on board and then going back on almost everything you said to woo that person away from a company that wasn't nearly as bad as you are. Pay the employees who do the work that brings in the money that keep you employed. Put proper training in place. Replace the 20 year old technology that never works. For God's sake you sell technology!!!! Update your technology so it's actually something that is designed to work with your business division and is up to date with current technology.

    Pros

You have the possibility to make a lot of money. Lower management does their best to help you succeed

    Cons

You're micro managed, with no ability to make decisions on your own. The software that should have been replaced 20 years ago. No. Lack of communication between upper management and grunts. Horrible training and benefits, your monthly cost for Health insurance will run $230, and its crap.

I have been working at Systemax full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company has a lot of opportunities where a person can make positive change and is not afraid to ask questions. The company is also very supportive of career development and encourages movement within the company as long as you prove yourself worthy of it.

    Cons

This it not a place for a person who is looking for a clear path or a routine when it comes to work. There generally aren't a lot of set protocols and procedures in place. You will have to be willing to pick up knowledge on the fly as you work day to day. You have to be proactive and know where to get the knowledge you need to get your job done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage more interaction between different departments and business units so that we learn best practices. Continue to develop work procedures to minimize the learning curve for new employees.

I worked at Systemax full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Friendly employees (IT Department).

    Cons

Old laptop computers in the IT Department. Working 10-12 hours a day, including weekends (IT Department). The "management" may care, but the higher-ups don't; those that affect your salary and benefits. Most positions have already been outsourced, so I doubt this review will ever be read, but if you do consider a position here, keep in mind you may soon be training your future $10k/year replacement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upgrade the IT Department's PC's -- Visual Studio 2013 is recourse-intensive (SSD a MUST). Try to minimize the 10-12 hour days, with working weekends. It's been proven time and time again that happy employees are productive employees! And hiring 10 outsourced employees at the last phase of a project has shown to be disastrous!

I worked at Systemax full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Employees like to play baseball in the summer. Coffee, tea, and cookies on Thursday. Comfortable chairs. Bathrooms are usually clean.

    Cons

Inadequate staff, low pay, required long hours, routine 12-14 hour days. Managers refuse to approve budget for adequate resources to perform functions. Internal communications are required to be non-retained chat or phone, no emails.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide appropriate budget for resources to perform functions competently and work/life balance. Allow email and normal forms of communication to more efficiently perform job duties.

    Pros

Coworkers are mostly friendly and helpful

    Cons

Managers are no help, work is piled on and many assignments are issued at last minute requesting you stay until done - not a good situation if you have classes or need to pick up kids. Many workers are very pushy - requesting that manager directions be ignored. Constant back stabbing - teams do not always work together. For a technology company workers are using very old computers and audio video equipment is not Alwyn set up correctly.
