Former Employee - Manager in London, England (UK)

I worked at Systemax full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great work colleagues, who are more than willing to pull together.

    Cons

Entropic management systems, upward feedback is neither encouraged, asked for, or listened to.
Communication, management issue decrees and do not foster an inclusive team.
    Archaic processes and procedures.
No communication of expectations, appraisal process is a joke.
No training plans, no encouragement to advance knowledge.
Ideas plagiarised by management for their own advancement.
The organisation is not mature enough to realise, that the 'quiet teams' are more productive, than the teams that are shouting and 'fire fighting' problems of their own making (lean six sigma).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management need to learn to be leaders and not bosses. Quote: YOU don't build a business. YOU build people and then PEOPLE build the business.
Implement a robust appraisal system, with definitive objectives and a training plan to help employees achieve them.
Communicate the company strategy and adhere to the stated company values.

I have been working at Systemax full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Only the salary is not bad compares with the Hungarian market... This is the only good thing I can tell about the branch in Budapest.

    Cons

Low company culture, very high fluctuation, no plans for future, very poor management. I would never offer any of my friends to work here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Systemax full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The company has a lot of opportunities where a person can make positive change and is not afraid to ask questions. The company is also very supportive of career development and encourages movement within the company as long as you prove yourself worthy of it.

    Cons

This it not a place for a person who is looking for a clear path or a routine when it comes to work. There generally aren't a lot of set protocols and procedures in place. You will have to be willing to pick up knowledge on the fly as you work day to day. You have to be proactive and know where to get the knowledge you need to get your job done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage more interaction between different departments and business units so that we learn best practices. Continue to develop work procedures to minimize the learning curve for new employees.

Former Employee - Director in Wellingborough, England (UK)

I worked at Systemax full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Up to 2011, the company (trading as Misco) transformed into a nimble and dynamic reseller that embraced it's customers, employees and the vendor community. The culture was customer centric and the majority of employees were happy which was reflected in the low attrition rate across all country locations (8 in total). The mantra was very much driven by US management who brought a 'work hard, play hard' mentality that gave life to the organisation. Misco had become one of the leading IT resellers in Europe and a profitable division of Systemax.

    Cons

New CEO hired in 2012 drastically changed the organisation.

I have been working at Systemax full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Fast decision making
    - You can make an influence at any levels and it's visible right away
    - Usually good team spirit
    - Young organisation = still shaping, you can influence
    - Office environment is nice, location is awesome

    Cons

    - Ultimate Chaos... at ALL levels...
    - Totally inadequate and unprofessional management
    - Unskilled operational staff, many new grads = combined with the above mentioned management is a disaster
    - Ridiculously unsocial working hours, nothing as promised or stated in your contract
    - Working on bank holidays are mandatory, holidays are managed by your manager not by yourself (even if you don't want to go, they will send you on holiday if they want it like that)
    - You never know if your overtime will be paid or not (but not much chance for excitement, usually it won't...)
    - Silos, silos everywhere through the whole EMEA organisation
    - Unnecessary amount of stress, pushed to all levels by top management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

VP's and above: consider changing your department directors ASAP, or leave the sinking ship until you can...

    Pros

I worked at the Systemax Business Services in Budapest.

    Cons

I liked my collegues. Usually you don't have to work long hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Salaries are not really competitive, so they hire the young and unexperienced. The ones with better qualities quickly move on. The management have big plans but they can't solve basic problems.

Terrible culture, Vice Presidents(senior management) lie to employee day by day

I worked at Systemax full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    It was a big mistake.

    Cons

They lie, lie, lie to people.I worked for Systemax SSC in Hungary but this was a big mistake. If anybody has a chance to avoid this company i propose to not work for systemax.Chaos, lie, no structure, no improvment, low salary(of course Vice presidents have very good package). Vice Presidents affraid to report any problem, issue to CEO because he does not like negative newses, so they lie to him everything is fine and goes smoothly. VPs are a reall survivers.Only one motiviation exist for HR and VPs: if you do not do as we want we fire you! They have a plane who will be fired in next couple of months but they lies to employee or not inform them they are in risk. There are a big corruption in Budapest office. They buy lot of device, tools, services much more expensive than it is available on the market. There is no real tender in case of any purchasing. Some of the 3rd party or supplier is one of the best friend of some of the VP. Of course the VPs have very good money from this. Also ther are lot of overtime which is not paid and against to local law.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Only for owners: fire/change VPs in HU. They just lie to everyone and do nothing effective work.In case of any problem they blame only subordinates. If the owners would like to build a great company they should change the Vice Presidents(senior management) to more competent leaders.

Former Employee - Web Programmer in Deerfield Beach, FL

I worked at Systemax full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Friendly employees (IT Department).

    Cons

Old laptop computers in the IT Department. Working 10-12 hours a day, including weekends (IT Department). The "management" may care, but the higher-ups don't; those that affect your salary and benefits. Most positions have already been outsourced, so I doubt this review will ever be read, but if you do consider a position here, keep in mind you may soon be training your future $10k/year replacement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upgrade the IT Department's PC's -- Visual Studio 2013 is recourse-intensive (SSD a MUST). Try to minimize the 10-12 hour days, with working weekends. It's been proven time and time again that happy employees are productive employees! And hiring 10 outsourced employees at the last phase of a project has shown to be disastrous!
