Advice to Senior Management
Hindsight is 20/20, but don't you wish you could go back a few years? TAP became big pharma and that isn't what it was all about.
Pros
great organizational culture, good senior leadership, excellent benefits, good people, good products, fairly transparent leadership (i.e. they let you know when things aren't going well and waht they're going to do to fix it), employees feel empowered and responsible for the company's performance, employees are proud to work there
Cons
my only real grip with TAP was with how promotions were given. it seemed to me that there really wasn't a strong incentive to perform very strongly because promotions seemed to be spread out amongst employees who met a very minimum bar.
Advice to Senior Management
find ways to really incentivize your employees to consistently perform well and to weed out ppl who are coasting.
Pros
TAP has been dissolved as of 2008
Cons
The corporate operational style was not very communicative and very matriarchal (bonobo rather than chimp)
Advice to Senior Management
Pay attention to complaints about middle management and senior management operational styles.
Pros
As with all companies, there were pockets of good and pockets of bad within the company.
Cons
Many of the lower level managers were immature to the point of being high school. Some of the upper level managers cared only about reaching their goals at the expense of lower level employees. And, one manager in particular found it an enjoyable sport to abuse her staff. She was not reprimanded because she got results. Her boss didn't acknowledge the "dead bodies" she produced because she did his dirty work for him.
Advice to Senior Management
Thank God the company doesn't exist any more.
Pros
I left in '06. Not sure what's happened since TAP is getting re-absorbed. TAP was a great place to work and it was easy for me to find a work/life balance. This is huge if you have a family. Management is very supportive, although it does get political at times. The people are great to work with. Not a lot of people with their own agendas.
The benefits were above and beyond what was typical in the industry as well.
Small company feel. Easy access to senior management. You can walk into Alan's office if you wanted to.
Cons
Limited career path. Gotta' be happy doing what you're doing for a bit. The structure working in the home office is flat.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep it up.
