I worked at TD Ameritrade as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

If you are working in Business Intelligence or Strategy, Planning & Analytics, you will be thrown right into the mix with the whole business unit. By the end of your summer, you will have learned a working proficiency in some of the most important data analytics softwares, which are extremely valuable to throw on your resume as a Senior in college.

    Cons

There are generally more things that need to be done than actual employees to get the jobs done. Thus, you will find yourself dabbling in different business functions and doing other people's work many times.

    Pros

You can't dump on a company for being a low cost producer that grows by acquisition. If you are very high in the chain that's great. Stable company that's not going anywhere.

    Cons

Your not supporting a family in NYC metro and You're not leveraging this for a job on Wall Street unless you want a quick crash course in functional stuff before heading to a retail job. If you are a liberal arts major from a non target school, probably better to head to a bank branch for a relationship manager job. At least you'll learn to sell. Then head to grad school.

I have been working at TD Ameritrade full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great associate environment. Committed to community improvement and philanthropy. Generally allows work/life balance flexibility.

    Cons

Below market salaries and lopsided compensation between executives and other associates. Kool Aid drinkers can be disingenuous and even threatening.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on core competencies and stop reaching. Fighting organic growth trends in derivative demand and focusing on accumulating assets.

I worked at TD Ameritrade full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Pretty organized in terms of hierarchy and org structure.

    Cons

HR moves super slow. Legal team is lousy and do not take any responsibility for their actions. Management at director levels are unable to make quick decisions. Everything needs to be bubbled up to the top most management to the point they are involved in any problems related to a IT programmer. Attrition rate is high specially in management

    Pros

Really pushing the envelope as far as trading platforms go. Teams across multiple cities task well together, even with the usual development hiccup. The company as a whole has a very family-oriented feeling, does plenty of outreach work, and is seen in the industry as an one of the best big firms. Definitely competitive pay too.

    Cons

Typical big-business organizational issues. Promotions not easy, but still there if you stick around long enough.

I have been working at TD Ameritrade full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Exposure to many different platforms and application suites. There is a really steep learning curve and you have to catch on quick to be successful.

    Cons

Management is very unstable and petty. Your manager one week is your co-worker the next and vice versa. Also, people tend to nurse grudges. CYA must be in your DNA to work here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead, dont manage. Too many of the managers in ThinkTECH are out of their depth and take on projects way larger that they could ever complete on budget or time. Instead of rolling up their sleeves and working with their teams to get projects done, they crack the whip and degrade and stress out their subordinates...

    Pros

Great people. Flat org structure. Great work-life balance. Management really cares about its employees. Best company I've ever worked for.

    Cons

    Pros

Friendly people. Work-life balance is good if you want to leave the office promptly at 5.

    Cons

There's not much room for innovation and excellence. There is a culture of "good enough" when it come to software design. Noone wants to go the "extra mile" to exceed expectations. Thats okay for some people but if you want to innovate or apply new skills/knowledge, Ameritrade is not the shop for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire assertive middle managers who want to push employees to do more.
