Pros
Alot of time off if you work in a 24/7 type position, with a compressed work week you can get between 3-6 days off between shifts, and night shifts are very easy and a good time to get alot of personal things done, like coursework, projects etc etc.
Cons
Totally incompetent upper management. They are like vultures, if they see something doing really well, 4 VPs will try to split it up so they can have a slice of the pie and end up screwing up very badly support-wise.
Advice to Senior Management
STOP THE REORGS, you are not helping!
Pros
Great benefits / stock share / pension plans
Cons
The only way to get a raise is to change departments.
There's always a reason to give you the minimum bonus even if you meet and exceed all your performance objectives.
They'll lay you off at the drop of a hat to out source work to India.
Advice to Senior Management
Drop the "Team Telus Cares" and "We want to be a responsible corporate citizen" if you're going to lay off hundreds of employees to outsource their work to India.
Pros
Dynamic environment for aspiring technology, business, marketing and project management professionals; Outstanding national brand; Financially healthy company; Being a large corporation means that there a number of assets and support groups available; Better positioned in the marketplace to promote broadband; I believe the company is going to the right direction and expand its competitive advantage.
Cons
Large corporation operating in a regulated industry makes it slow to adapt and fix operational support concerns which can be quite frustrating at times. But TELUS has the capabilities to focus and understand market forces. Various cultures exist where some management teams are more focused to the growth of their employees, while others can be micro-managers.
Advice to Senior Management
Translate the slogan "The Future is Friendly" to "The Future is Now".
Pros
TELUS is located in many geographically diverse locations so there is opportunity to move. Also, because of the broad scope of operations, there were opportunities to move from sales to marketing to operations to regulatory. Unique opportunities such as regulatory affairs cannot be found at other employers.
Cons
Despite the replacement of most of the senior management team, it is still an old boys club. The company does not show respect for employees and decisions are often made within a vacuum.
Advice to Senior Management
The level of respect demonstrated when George Petty was CEO was legendary as was his vision. He treated employees with dignity and respect and walked away from overpriced acquisitions. Revisit his thinking.
Pros
Not applicable as I have left the employ of TELUS - wasn't fired or packaged out, just resigned after a 25+ year career there.
Cons
Very poor morale, constant worry of whether or not you'll have a job a month down the road
Advice to Senior Management
Bring the work back in house, stop the bleeding of jobs to overseas countries and also in-Canada contractors
Pros
Lots of opportunities to advance, and expand. You have unlimited options for what you want to do. Just because you start in one department or position doesn't mean you are tied down there. If you start out customer service, and it doesn't work for you there are options and different areas you can go to.
Cons
The hours sometimes are not compatible with a family, and they are not flexible for what you work and when.
Advice to Senior Management
To attract a more mature level of employee in say residential care it would be a good idea to be somewhat flexible in the hirings. Do a specific hiring for a day position versus nights. Give employees a bit of a choice.
Pros
Excellent exposure to new technologies and solutions. Always plenty to learn. Many different career paths. Coworkers are great.
Cons
Only way to get a raise is change jobs or threaten to quit. Major accomplishments and achievements will only net you the annual 1-2% increase. In good job markets, this quickly leaves you below fair market value. They constantly brag that they are attracting and retaining top talent, but I've seen little to that affect. In my area, half my team is ready to quit and vacancies usually take over a year to fill. These are management professional positions, not union.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus more on employees, morale is terrible. Everything that was pro-employee or a perk is quickly disappearing to add a few more cents to the dividend.
Pros
TELUS is a great place to work because they have an open line of communication between those employees on the front lines and upper management. Feedback regarding your job is always welcome and when appropriate, our recommendations for improvement are put into practise. The wages are above average for similar work at other organizations, and the benefits are very good.
There is room for self-growth and professional advancement, and opportunities are based upon merit as well as seniority. Hard work is rewarded and excellence is encouraged. They are very focused on continuing to educate employees to better serve our clients and overall, the environment is one of constant change and development.
Cons
The department I work for does not offer a steady schedule. You can work anytime from 8 am to 9 pm, Monday through Saturday, and your shifts change each week. This makes it difficult to arrange for child care or post secondary education while continuing to work. Many people who leave do so to better facilitate these life changes.
Advice to Senior Management
I would say that generally, TELUS is a well managed professional environment. I would recommend that Senior Management continue to take employee feedback into consideration, because overall employee satisfaction is fairly high and I believe that most of that is due to the fact that TELUS makes a considerable effort to make employees feel valued and appreciated.
Pros
Great benefits, and perks, great co-workers, great wage, opportunity for growth! Great programs to learn, access to books, teaching skills and courses to gain knowledge and move upwards in growth and excellence.
Cons
Large company makes it easy to get lost in the shuffle, the position I'm in gets to be overwhelming at times, focused on stats and sales.
Advice to Senior Management
None, I feel that they do an excellent job to try to communicate with all of us.
Pros
TELUS is a progressive company that provides opportunity for those willing to work hard and learn the industry. This is not a place to work if you have trouble getting to work on time, don't return phone calls/e-mail, or have issues with following a complex process. TELUS also provides continuous educational opportunities and if you are not a "learner" TELUS isn't for you. The benefits are outstanding (3 weeks holiday to start!) but the pay is only average. On the downside, the office politics and rumor mill run on overdrive at TELUS and the office drama can be overwhelming at times. In all, if you love technology, work well with others, have above average intelligence, and want to grow with a company that is also growing TELUS is for you.
Cons
The job processes are some of the most complex you will encounter anywhere.
Advice to Senior Management
The pay structure needs to be more competitive with competing employers. This will help reduce turnover.
