Pros
Probably the only big pro- the people around you. Young and fun bunch to have around you.
Benefits are good, though the usual round of cuts have been flowing through the system.
Work life balance.
Cons
Lack of career growth. Opportunities are non existent at middle management level. Arbit policies e.g span of control further limit the growth oppty
Overall engagements levels are at nadir. Salary freeze, layoffs, Incentives cut have really impacted morale and engagement at program manager/specialist level.
Manager quality is really suspect. I would guess only 50% of the managers are really worth their positions.
Once the market situation on employment improves, i suspect that attrition rates will increase significantly.
Advice to Senior Management
Lack of coherent strategy
Poor leadership skills. People management at senior exec level is really questionabl
Pros
- Fairly competitive salary
- 3 extra "personal" days on top of 3 weeks vacation
Cons
- heavy workload
- no overtime pay
- demanding management
- complicated management and processes to get the work done.
- just okay working environment
- need to pay for parking
Advice to Senior Management
- remove redundant layers
- stop using long and confusing business terminologies
- respect employees
Pros
You have opportunities to mange different projects
Cons
employees are disengaged due to recent changes in compensation
Advice to Senior Management
ditch employee survey if you are: 1) not able to disconnect the survey results from bonus results, 2) not willing to address the problems.
Pros
TELUS' entrepreneurial environment allows for self directed career growh; work life balance is something that is promoted and exhibited by most senior managers. Because of a skew towards young professionals, culture is friendly, casual and dynamic.
Cons
Formal coaching, mentoring and development programs not a high-point. Although TELUS strives to hire the best and brightest, and manages to maintain a material base of consultancy experienced professionals, it does not pay consultant wages. Bonus program is somewhat generous on balance, however does not allow for pay for exceptional performance which results in laissez faire mediocre output at times.
Advice to Senior Management
Walk the talk and help promote career growth. Dont sacrifice short term stock performance for long term competitive sustainability.
Pros
Good culture, good compensation/benefits and nice work/life balance. While some processes are cumbersome, the IT organization provides a great opportunity to be on the leading edge of new technology. Really good people across all levels in the organization.
Cons
Being part of a company of over 30 000 can be challenging (as opposed to Mobility which was much smaller).
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the good work - excellent communication with all levels in the organization.
Pros
Worklife balance is really good at TM. managers are really helpful in making sure that the employee is well taken care of . Also there is tremendous oppty to learn and grow. A lot of responsibility is provided early on the career. The company is tolerant is one makes mistakes, as long as you learn from them and apply learnings to improve your overall performance the next time. Another thing i like are the people. Really cool and a fun bunch to work with
Cons
Too many meetings tend to impact delivery. At times we get bogged down by meetings. But at times this may be importance as it provides structure and ensure direction is set.
Advice to Senior Management
Doing good ... but can probably be more aggressive
Pros
TELUS pays well compared to similar communication companies in Canada for similar positions. The benefits package is also very good. There is room to grow and TELUS generally promotes from within. Learning is encouraged (tuition reimbursement, although it isn't easy to get approved) and free courses through an internal learning gateway. TELUS also offers discounts on our wireless services. There generally is a positive and open enviroment which makes it easy to provide feedback.
Cons
Some of the negative points about working for TELUS is the workload. There tends to be constant network/system failures which overloads our generally understaffed department. Response times to correct such issues are long, and the company is slow to react (ie. posting an automated message that we are having difficulties). As mentioned above, it is challenging to get approval for any training over and above elearnings. Time off is very difficult to get, again, as we generally are understaffed.
Advice to Senior Management
TELUS still needs to reduce the amount of 'layers' of management. There also needs to be a focus on improving infrastructure rather than simply leaving support specialists to deal with the aftermath. TELUS also needs to deal with the staffing problem as people should be able to request time off and actually get it (people get denied even if they request time months in advance). Office space is also becoming a critical issue - we need more.
Pros
Great co-workers, positive attitudes. I look forward to going to work every day.
Cons
Out of touch senior management, middle leadership is entirely lacking. Poor benefits.
Advice to Senior Management
Get some quality mid-tier leadership to cut through the BS and focus on the important things. We need leaders who are in touch, and know where the waste is. Focus more on efficiency!
Pros
Exposure to new technologies (web services, GPS etc)
It is fast paced environment.
Friendly people and capable coworkers. There are possibilities for horizontal shift.
Cons
Amount of work load is big and never ending,
Poor upper and middle management with lack of leadership capabilities.
Not so good compensation
There is lack of processes or existing one are not efficient or outdated.
Advice to Senior Management
Find better leaders.
Have proper direction from executive level
Reduce amount of wasted work due to wrong directions.
Pros
Flexible and relaxed if you decided to be lazy. If you are under good manager, it's better.
Cons
Overall, since merge with the TELUS landline, the used to be young culture been disappeared. Especially too many process to follow.
Advice to Senior Management
Try every effort to assess individuals and to treat fair enough.
