I worked at TELUS as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Worked contract and still able to maintain work-life balance. As a contractor treated Ok. Met and worked with many great people and some now have continued as friends past my departure from Telus (due to Telus suddenly ending all contracts over 3 years in length). I would work for Telus again if the opportunity presented.

    Cons

Contract wage cut back from starting rate (could be contractor resourcing company I was with too but not truly sure what the driver was or where it came from). Generally many senior mangers are based out west which makes for a challenging "understanding the business out east" environment and getting the right out east processes in place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Although, wasn't' a front-line or unionized employee, as a dotted-line front line manager (no reporting employees) the corporation's leadership (director level & VP level) need to better understand the contribution front-line mangers with extensive on-the-ground knowledge can make to the business and the value they want and can add to Telus' bottom line and delivery capabilities.

    Cons

It wasn't always as technical as I would like.

I worked at TELUS full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Competitive wages in the industry
-Some helpful co-workers I eventually ended up being great friends with
-Decent perks & benefits (profit sharing, RRSP and bonus)
    -$15 mobile plans for employees

    Cons

-Some awful co-workers who try to intoxicate the corporate culture. Lots of backstabbing and office politics
-Get blamed for the least mistake, and no one willing to take responsibility, instead shifting the blame on others
-Lack of opportunities for career growth. Moving up to managerial roles can be challenging, require enormous amounts of time, and is based on who knows who (favouritism)
-Some awful team/senior managers who apply lots of double standards to the work place, and target minorities especially. (I saw lots of good people quit/leave because of this)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Take action and fire employees who bring in a negative and toxic corporate culture to the work place. I understand most of the employees are unionized, and making such bold decisions can sometimes be tough. However, this is very essential in order to foster a positive team environment.
-Reshuffle the management team on a regular basis. Some of them apply lots of double standards and are guilty of open favouritism.
-Implement an independent employee review process whereby management is thoroughly assessed. Those guilty of poor management need to be fired.

I have been working at TELUS full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Increasing focus on front-line and lower-level management employee satisfaction and 'engagement'. Strong supporter of flexible work location arrangements (Workstyles) -- encouraging working from home few days a week.

    Cons

Compensation below market. Middle-management employees with significant additional team leadership accountability do not get properly comp'ed for that.

With all focus on front-line and lower-level management employees, middle-management got forgotten about. Quite a political place -- it's all about whom you know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to middle-management. Live what is being preached publicly by CEO re: values. A lot of bad team leadership gets hidden by senior managers from executives.

I have been working at TELUS full-time

    Pros

Team involvement and community dedication, promote heavily on internal hiring

    Cons

Doesn't pay nearly as they should especially if you have been promoted multiple times within. Easier to quit get a job elsewhere and go back a year or two later and make significantly more. They should pay their internal employees better when they do get promoted so they don't have to battle with this. A lot of internal systems are archaic.
