Cons
Not much room for mobility, bureaucratic
Advice to Senior Management
More innovation and proactive thinking would help move the company forward
Pros
Stable, good culture, dynamic and room for development
Cons
not competitive in compensation.
not consistent in strategy.
Advice to Senior Management
More insightful and consistent strategies for company 's plan to development in EAST region. As well as focusing on more on revenue rather than politics.
Pros
Really good compensation compared to similar jobs; flexible work (dependent on work group) is a huge advantage in keeping people.
Cons
Too many people doing similar work, leading to territorial behaviour.
Advice to Senior Management
Honestly, we probably have too many people working at TELUS - lay some folks off. Be bold.
Pros
- great team atmosphere
- high volume if you are in a mall
- work phone, access to latest handsets
- great benefits
Cons
- managers are incompetent
- senior management doesn't care about the ideas from the workforce
- very secretive with information which should be shared
Advice to Senior Management
put people who understand the technology and the business at the top and get rid of the pretender executives
Pros
Pay was very competitive and there was a very good work-life balance. There was also a good benefits plan, great corporate pension contribution, and decent employee share purchase plan.
Cons
Job title alignment to pay & accountabilities across the organization was a big issue. There were some cases where directors on the Consumer Solutions business-side earned less than a developer or business systems analyst within the IT department. There were directors who had a total of 3 people on their team while functional managers on the IT side averaged over 20 direct reports. Telus also had a very institutional employee culture, and had a frat house like environment on the Consumer Solutions business areas who enjoyed "hanging out" after work together. This was likely due to the large contingent of university students recruited annually on the Consumer Solutions business areas and given lofty titles without the equivalent pay. Managers in Consumer Solutions had job functions similar to a camp counsellor.
Advice to Senior Management
There needs to be more focus on job title alignment to ensure that roles, responsibilities, and pay are consistent across the organization.
Pros
great people, good benefits, nice brand
Cons
re-org is causing significant pain
TELUS as "a great place to work" is too often "talk the talk, but fail to walk the walk"
three solitudes "west-wired", "east-wireless", PQ
Advice to Senior Management
they all can make good business decisions, teach them how to be better managers. Making all the decisions doesnt make you the best leader, it just makes you overworked
Pros
Great work life balance possibilities
Cons
Too short-term orientation of senior management, or too little communication about the mid and long term direction.
Less and less formal training is provided (no budget)
Company is in constant state of re-structuring and the knowledge gets lost.
Team members adhere too much to the process than use the common sense
Advice to Senior Management
Live the declarations that the employees are very important - provide more training, more lateral and hierarchical learning and growth opportunities.
More planning is needed when big changes are executed.
Do not offshore our core competencies
Pros
Good benefits and work like balance
free cell phone and laptop (depending on your roles)
work from home options
Cons
not much about growth.. people stay around for life.. even if they are not performing.. new talent is hired after so many rounds of interviews and now they are letting go folks and putting new ads for hire
Advice to Senior Management
Instead of letting go current employees and posting new ads after month. Focus on career development and give them the option to move around.
Saving cost by limiting local traveling for workshops, roadshows, etc.. use live meeting, tele presence and other technologies.
By taking jobs outside canada .. yah you are saving money... but in the long run it will hurt you.. (customer service will go down.. and u will loose the touch with your core canadian clients)
Pros
1. Great people
2. Telecommuting in all levels of the company
3. Best office building in Toronto (has a gym, tv's etc.)
Cons
1. Top brass not visible
2. Lack of clarity on strategy
3. Company unwilling to experiment
Advice to Senior Management
Get out there in front of employees. Bring back the "Ask Darren" teleconferences.
