Great company, but a little underpaying in some departments

I have been working at TIBCO Software full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The hours are very flexible in marketing, as long as you get your work done, most people don't bat an eye at when you come in. Most of the people are friendly and supportive. Most of the time your decisions do not get second-guessed, which I appreciate because lack of respect was prevalent across my previous company. HR does fun TGIFs every few months with music, food, and drinks. Every year there is a fun company party, as well as a fun company picnic to show appreciation to employees.

    Cons

There is still a very reactionary culture here, where things are well-planned, but things seem to be starting to turn around. Some people are paid well, while others are paid very poorly. Promises of raises and promotions aren't always kept, which has been causing a mass exodus in Marketing. There are a lot of contractors who have been waiting to become full-time employees.

    Advice to Management

Pay your current employees better so you won't have to be looking for their replacement in a couple of months.

Great engineers and mostly horrible managers

I worked at TIBCO Software full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great engineers, pretty much as good as any in the Valley. Very nice office and subsidized meals. Never-ending supply of engineering and product challenges...as the new kids on the block are chipping away some of Tibco's bread-and-butter offerings (such as, complex event processing systems)

    Cons

Some of the management needs a lot of rework. Some departments are still in the backwaters of yesterday with silly politicking and power struggles--totally un-Silicon Valley-like. Some divisions cannot tell the difference between what engineering is supposed to do and what product management is supposed to do. So you end up with this muddled product that cannot be sold as it has not been thoroughly vetted with potential or existing customers. I have even seen departments struggling mightily to define an ROI once implementation had been in progress; or come up with the stupidest possible ROI (e.g. a list of features). I hope the current management will do some clean up and get new blood in the mix; streamline some divisions; and generally get the most out of these very smart engineers.

    Advice to Management

Listen and get smarter about listening to all engineers and product managers. Need to make sure that there is definite autonomy of product management. And hire PMs that can define ROI clearly.
