I worked at TRADER Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Like any place, its the co-workers that you enjoy.
    - The environment is what you make of it...
    - Happy that I am no longer at this company

    Cons

    - Management has no strategy for where they want to go...and if they do, they don't communicate it to all the employees
    - Decisions can change day to day
    - Lack of Strategic Vision - again if its known, its known only by the upper crust who never distill this information down
    - Bullying is a tactic often used by some - not all managers
    - Democracy is non existent in this company - employee feedback will go on deaf ears
    - S/he that screams the loudest...gets what they want
    - I feel for any remaining employee that feels that Trader Corporation is all they have going for them
    - Benefits - can't be benefits when you have to pay for them

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Don't be driven exclusively by money and how well your pockets will get lined.
    - Keep your resume current - you will need it once the company is sold later this year or next by Apax

I have been working at TRADER Corporation full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The company is driven to succeed and dominate the buying and selling of cars online.
    Make data driven decisions
    Strong management team
The company is investing in improving how the teams work together to be more efficient
Moving towards agile and away from waterfall development
Management is very accommodating and flexible with the team and environment
The culture in the Burnaby office is great
Everyone gets along well and supports each other
The company has free beer fridays once a month and BBQs - The pool table, ping pong, XBOX, Foosball allow for some fun downtime.
    Fitness Centre
    free parking
    flex hours

    Cons

Haven't been here for a long time so have very few cons - I think it's a great place to work - I see from previous posts some people had issues but I think there has been a management change or shift and I don't see any of those problems here anymore - I see management working hard on improving areas across the board - office, culture, communication, structure

Very target driven which can hamper innovation by being more risk adverse
Departments are very independent of each other - they are working on changing this though

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve how departments communicate between each other and with the Toronto office
More transparency throughout the company on what is happening across all departments and teams

Most rewarding job in many years

I have been working at TRADER Corporation

    Pros

Extremely collaborative group of professionals; always looking to improve processes and gain efficiency through team work, automation, and willing to take a chance on trying new ways of doing things; logic-driven decision-making leads to creative solutions and makes room for constant evolution in the user experience. This is a perfect environment for someone with a solid background who has confidence to implement and lead change.

Role definition is clear and positions held are meaningful and have purpose. Small project teams deliver in organized sprints and are very cohesive. Leadership is intelligent and flexible. Not a lot of positions at Trader where you "wonder what they do?" Much growth in mobile and dev roles as new technology is constantly explored.

Very warm corporate culture and a comfortable office space.

    Cons

While small project teams are cohesive, the large-scale projects that impact multiple depts can be disjointed for a number of reasons ranging from disparate issue and task tracking systems to gaps across integrating technical platforms.

During project initiation, some analysis-paralysis may set in if the product is novel in concept however there are many ways to drive the decision ranging from multi-variant tests, focus groups or pilots.

The departments are so entirely collaborative, there isn't a lot of balance in who is rewarded or who is identified as requiring coaching as this is not consistently measured or tracked on all teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Commit to one project management methodology that is used organization wide. Mostly any dev shop can be a waterfall-agile hybrid, but Trader is unique and has the right kind of energy to commit to Agile. Sitting on the fence will slow down every team from Exec to Product to Dev and Sales, too.

Make the projects even smaller and form programs of work to mitigate the analysis-paralysis on some of the newer products.

Track newbies more closely to ensure their onboarding in on track and that they are performing.

    I worked at TRADER Corporation

    Pros

Great group of people at the developer/QA/DBA levels.
Company is making progress towards employee training.

    Cons

Product Team lacks vision and common sense.
Executive Team is mostly made up of old school corporate executives attempting to run a progressive Information Technology company and failing.
Bare minimum health benefits. No Orthodontic coverage. The perks you do get are generally for optics and have no real life value (coffee cups, dollar store phone chargers etc)
Bullying is present in several departments and levels of the company.
Perks such as pool table privileges have been suspended during times of high office stress.
Bonus system is based to much on popularity.
Managers are good but often ham-stringed by directors and VP's.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to put a bow on the bare minimum that you give to people. Your employees are intelligent people and can see though it. Give them incentives that positively impact their lives.

    Pros

work-life is generally easily balanced for most positions as you do not always have to take work home with you. Games/entertainment area's in offices.

    Cons

Favoritism based culture with little opportunity for advancement unless you are willing to be a "yes-man". games/entertainment area's are place near users desks which limits their availability

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work with the other departments to actually know what is going on in the company. Most of the time
