    Need turnaround plan and leaders

I worked at TRIA Beauty full-time

    Pros

Great products. They really do provide consumers real benefits. Marketing was very good until the former CEO ruined it. Engineers seem to be some of the brightest in the industry.

    Cons

Need a clear plan for the turnaround. Then, need leaders who know how to do a turnaround. Both of these things are not happening fast enough while the business continues to decline and there's nothing in the product pipeline.

    Advice to Management

Do something that actually fixes the company. Don't just cut cost. And don't keep rewarding and hiring people who would just agree with everything the CEO says.

    Pros

At it's best, Tria Beauty was an exciting, energetic, enthusiastic place to work. Development of cutting edge medical devices meant there was always a buzz in the office.

    Cons

Horrible upper management and a marketing department allowed to go wild with misleading claims made to consumer.Rapid turnover in most departments.

    Advice to Management

Please contain your marketing department. The grossly inflated claims they continually make in print, media and packaging do the company no favors.

    Pros

Great products, some great people, nice offices, great benefits. Company and new leadership are doing a lot of heavy lifting to correct the mess from the previous management. It's exciting to be part of this effort.

    Cons

Entitlement culture, too many slackers who prefer to complain than pitch in and get the work done. It's good to see some of the leaving and new blood coming in. Strategy is not yet fully baked but there's light on the horizon.

    Advice to Management

Put more effort into communication to the employees, increase cross-functional events and projects. And keep on driving the clean-up and re establishing the company. Exciting times ahead.

    Pros

My direct manager was very approachable and direct about the issues the company was facing; their seemed to be many smart people across all areas of the company; the products they made worked well for the most part; people worked very hard

    Cons

So much finger-pointing - usually towards the operational side of the building. There were town halls where the prior CEO would ridicule different groups - for real. It felt like there was a VP either leaving or being fired every other month, yet no one ever explained to us why. I never saw much collaboration or trust among anyone and it seemed like everyone who got promoted was the favorite of some higher-up. I didn't realize how bad it was until I left and figured out that wasn't normal. Too bad because the products seemed to work real well and most of the customers i talked to seemed to be so happy with their results.

    Pros

Great benefits and comps, mostly nice employees. Nice set up and offices. Flex time and dog friendly. Easy access from freeway and plenty of parking

    Cons

Extremely high turnover at all levels in in most departments breeds a lot of instability and uncertainty. Most offices and cubicles are empty, which feels like a ghost town.

    Pros

Smart People. Friendly Environment. Not a stressful environment.
New CEO seems to have a more clear vision for the company.

    Cons

Leadership is still figuring out goals for the company. Overall strategy for the product has been given over to a few people and they are still considering the same tactics that has left the company in its current slump.

Laid off over 30% of workforce as a result of poor 2015 performance.

    Advice to Management

Communicate. Stop working behind a wall of secrecy. Employees will work harder to help solve any problems if you are honest about what they are. Telling everyone that things look good when they clearly are not is a foolish thing to do.

    Pros

Coffee, parking, decent restaurants near by, nice building and few nice people, very few.

    Cons

Lack of leadership. Even the new CEO is somewhat unsure the direction of the company's future. Forecast keeps changing, downward and most are very small minded people. Place is virtual ghost town with multiple layoffs. Some walked out on their own and others waited, knowing after layoffs, they could collect unemployment. Start-up environment with corporate mentality, in a very bad way.

    Advice to Management

Get out of your office and talk to your staff, all of them. Tell them that you understand and appreciate their contribution. Most people are doing 2, 3 people's job since the multiple layoffs in 6 months so don't be a jerk to them.

Talented, adept leaders are fleeing, left with incompetent (new) management

    Pros

Under prior CEO leadership (Kevin Appelbaum), the opportunities to build a strong long-term company, create a new category within the Beauty space and personally grow and develop were limitless. Leadership was strong, the company's strategic vision was clear, we were inspired to make a difference and had a lot of fun doing it together.

    Cons

Since September, the company has been in mass chaos. The board of directors clearly don't have a long term plan for the company with the new management they've appointed who don't have a positive track record for leading and building companies, have irrelevant experience and are being allowed to destroy the company faster than imaginable. Employees are fleeing because of current management and where the direction the company is headed doesn't look good.

    Advice to Management

Hire leaders (note: LEADER vs. Manager) who are skilled at building a beauty or skincare business, otherwise, you will loose more talent, confidence in the company and distribution partners will drop you. Probably already too late.
