I'm a current employee of TSA working as a Behavior Detection Officer.

I have been working at TSA (Transportation Security Administration)

    Pros

It's a foot in the door for other federal jobs. And we are at the forefront in the fight against terrorism within our country. People depend on you whether they acknowledge it or not.

    Cons

A thankless job that requires you to be self motivated because most people don't like the work you do feeling everyone but them should be screened.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The people below you need your support and undivided attention.

I have been working at TSA (Transportation Security Administration) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

For the amount that you make you don't really do terrible hard work. After 1 year you are bumped up to the next pay grade. Most of the people I work with work hard and fast, are friendly and have your back whether it be towards management or passengers and aide you in situations. A good in to the federal job system, if you have prior experience in other specialized fields you can easily apply to other agencies. Training that they offer may be useful to other careers and goals in life.

    Cons

During busy seasons you can almost expect to be on mandatory overtime on certain days. The training that they offer is good but doesn't always sink in and most of the time you have to refer to persons who have been with the agency for a while to get the proper instruction. For a security organization there is too much structure around customer service and it definitely shows to the employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Training classes should be reworked and more in depth. Security is security and there is nothing around that, and airport security is a slow process, you shouldn't feel rushed from management to meet a certain quota of passenger throughput.

I have been working at TSA (Transportation Security Administration) part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You're able to get insurance benefits immediately upon employment ... regardless of status (i.e. Part-Time/Full-Time)

    Cons

Dealing with negative colleagues but that's every job . Also, its difficult to move up the ladder within the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more proactive rather than reactive

I have been working at TSA (Transportation Security Administration) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good Government Benefits which may be the same as any other government agency benefits. It is inside work and you have some air conditioning and some heat.

    Cons

Rude and selfish passengers, scheming co-workers, incompetent leadership, ridiculous rules, absurd human resource regulations and the ability to make you work 30 days without pay during the government shut-down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No loop holes, no exceptions, 3rd time violators should be placed on the "No Fly List"

I worked at TSA (Transportation Security Administration)

    Pros

The pay is not bad for the locations, especially if you only have a high school diploma or GED.

    Cons

The basic requirement is a GED. There is no reward for education or military service, the leadership of this organization is a joke. They take care of themselves and don't care about the hard workers that actually do the leg work to keep the flying public safe.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of the good employees and get rid of the trouble makers or you will loose all the employees who care about collecting more than a paycheck.

I have been working at TSA (Transportation Security Administration) full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Ok pay for entry level, but don't expect a raise. The job itself is really easy.

    Cons

Terrible management that don't care about you at all. I've never worked a job that treated you more like a child. Stay away!! This place is a joke!!!

I have been working at TSA (Transportation Security Administration) part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Starting wage, scheduled raises, paid time off, government benefits, great place for exposure to working with thousands of people a day, a whole lot of overtime offered.

    Cons

A whole lot of negative employees, much left to be desired from a majority of management, job responsibilities constantly change yet there is little to no training, all said it is a challenging environment to operate in and even with the cons TSA does strive to provide excellent public service.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

more emphasis on training rather then discipline.

    Pros

    Excellent Mission and dedicated people

    Cons

Leadership thinks knowledge is hierarchical - the people that know the most are at the top. This is definitely false.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen too the employees and quit trying feather your own position. Don't hire technically incompetent deputy administrators.
