I worked at Tacoma Public Utilities full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Tacoma Power has a good amount of challenging projects and a lot of opportunity to work across different teams.

    Cons

They decreased their training budget significantly, departments are siloed, the pay is just ok and a lot of the people who have been there for a long time aren't getting salary increases.

    Advice to Management

Stop with all of the new initiatives, let supervisors do their job, supervising their departments and bring back training budget.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Excellent pay and benefits with plenty of time off and some flex time.

    Cons

Consultants come and go and make major changes without long term thought to both employees as well as customers. A little closed minded at the top, and pretty much unaware of what is going on in the org.

    Advice to Management

Consultants are not always right, please use your own judgment before making rash decisions.

    Cons

Promotions and job advancement are pretty hard to get.

    Pros

Pay is 70% of median with annual step increases, benefits are comprehensive and offer very little out of pocket expenses. The people are service oriented and care about getting a job done, rather than simply about being a bureaucracy. There is an emphasis on continuous process improvement.

    Cons

TPU isn't on the cutting edge. Also, since it is a public utility, there are few direct monetary incentives to excelling at a position if there isn't a position directly above your current classification that is open. Also, the age range of the current workforce makes it difficult to introduce and adopt new useful technology

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid about investing in new technology to provide new services to customers - like fiber to the home. Be more innovative with program offerings for energy conservation. Invest in community solar programs to improve and retain a green image for the company. Work extra hard to get customers in the lobby to have their bill auto-payed through a bank account online.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Fair compensatiopn for work performed, Respect for experience and the willingness of peers to share process knowledge to make every ones job safer and more efficient.

    Cons

Seems as if the management does not rely on the experience of the people "in the trenches" for ways to optimizer the process. Rather try to implement models from past training or experience, when ewach process is specific, and unique to this wastewater treatment plant.

    Advice to Management

Rely on, and glean information from the people who are actually doing the work. Hire more management from the Rank and file
