I worked at Take Charge America full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I had a flex schedule and worked 6-2pm. there were always options to change to 4x10 or 4x9. Loved my team and supervisor. Lots of opportunity, at the time.

    Cons

    Company went down. Had layoffs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

There are several "feel good" client program. Internal promotions are frequent, and the CEO will promote women with or without college degrees into executive positions and suites. There are opportunities to be promoted into senior positions due to recent turnover. Dress code is casual and there is a lot of parking.

    Cons

Significant loss of senior management that has created a loss in institutional knowledge and business partnerships. Revenue is generated on a declining client base and creditor payments. Employees anticipate a merger or closure and are looking for their next job. Four RIFs in past year have reduced company to 1/4 of size and little chance of recovery.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Merge with an agency with a qualified, honest and experienced senior team. Senior management could take a cut in their large salaries based on size of agency .

Great Mission, but poor road map to make it happen.

    Pros

Many of the people are great to deal with, and are friendly. They treat some employee groups great

    Cons

Leadership by committee doesn't work. The current RIF is bad idea, the company should be looking to retain employees, not allowing some of the better talent to leave. Many of the SLT feel entitled, but really need to go. They bring little to the table, but a name, and a big salary. They pay bonuses out to various staff for breaking even. All the while cutting staff members. They need to realize what sort of company they are, and be that company. When working in the space they are used to, they do a great job. When trying to become something new, they have no clue. None of the SLT does, and they are just floundering around, drawing out the inevitable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If the mission is to reduce, remove the Cxx staff, the SLT members have to go, Let David Pattison take over and run the company, and remove the unnecessary departments, combine the call center, and give up on the projects that just don't offer any promise of financial stability, get rid of Student Loans, because its not a business, unless the government changes the regulations, get rid of bankruptcy, because it a money loser, stick with the core of what you know, expand the advertising in areas where the company makes money, reduce in states that don't allow for an additional monthly fee, lose the educational outreach that just a huge waste of money, with is ever growing staff, and acquire, some of the other companies that are failing, use the trusts' muscle and TAKE over the other companies, while their is something worthwhile acquiring. Refine the vision, and just overall end the entitlement that many of the mid managers feel they are due.

I worked at Take Charge America full-time

    Pros

Most direct line staff and middle management are true and caring. Office environment is nice.

    Cons

The majority of leadership are under qualified. Leadership may have a good heart but making way too much at the top and direction changes with the wind. I would caution any professional to work there.

    Pros

unique call center environment, each day presents new challenges, not one of those jobs where you do the same old thing every day

    Cons

Dying industry, program doesn't really help consumers overall & they could get many of the same breaks by setting up their own program with each creditor

    Pros

I researched TCA before I started working here. I wanted to work for a company that had a purpose, and provided real value to people, rather than just selling product or taking orders. TCA allows you to do that. Day in and day out it's possible to see many ways that you are helping people improve their lives.

    Cons

Micro management left counselors working to meet arbitrary metrics that really did not measure their ability to counsel clients or actually manage accounts. This is improving, but it's still a big part of the culture for some.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue working to get the opinion of all, not just 'key' counselors. Being able to communicate ideas should not be left only to those management wants to hear from. Find ways to gather ideas from all.

I have been working at Take Charge America full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Nice atmosphere
    Mostly friendly people
    decent pay
    Awesome bonuses

    Cons

Executives make way too much income
Managers don't know how to "discipline" employees
Company claims non-profit status, but does everything in their power to MAKE money
They want you to think "it's all about the customers" and "you can speak on the customer's level" - but they won't actually let you BE YOURSELF

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire robots or do the counseling completely online...There's no need for human interaction, you are only concerned with keep those big paychecks

    Pros

The building is amazing with an on-site cafe. The people are friendly and have a long standing. Reps and middle managers are driven by the fact that they are helping financially distressed consumers each and every day. The company provides a viable service that is needed, especially in this economy.

    Cons

Too many consumers do not know the difference between credit counseling/debt management and debt settlement - and as a result, tend to think debt management is not beneficial when in fact, debt management plans, when administred properly can help. TCA is not debt settlement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more aware of the resources and skills you have available in the people that you have employed. Find more opportunitites to offer career advancement.

    Cons

Hard to move up and the pay is good for non-profit but could be a bit more. Raises are only 2.5% and there are no bouns'.
