I have been working at Tandem Labs

    Pros

Great place to learn new techniques and skills
Scientific staff is very experienced in assay development and trouble-shooting

    Cons

Currently under management restructuring. The number of staff meetings during the week limits time to complete necessary laboratory work. Lack of office equipment (eg. office phones, desktop PCs) limits communication between team members ability to analyze data.

I worked at Tandem Labs full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There are very few if any pros working at Tandem. Offered the standard benefits of most companies, salary is okay but need to negotiate prior to accepting a position, vacation time is minimal

    Cons

Management lacks leadership, professionalism and are dictators. There is no opportunity for growth or career advancement. Scientific knowledge is lacking substantially. Very hostile work environment. There is a high level of stress compounded by the lack leadership within the organization. Very high turnover rate

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide a significant amount of management training. Respect the individuals that work there.

I have been working at Tandem Labs full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Due to turnover job security is almost guaranteed

    Cons

Little opportunity for career advancement, non-functional HR department, low raises that fall well under cost of living adjustment standards, stressful work environment. Management do not offer departmental training, do not perpetuate cross training. Benefits are exorbitantly expensive given requirements for online surveys that must be completed in order to receive benefit. Benefit assistance non-existent within HR department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raises should meet or exceed national averages for stellar work performance; teach team managers how to train and be a resource to employees, restructure HR to be a resource and benefit to employees rather than a opportunistic gossiping backstabber.

Drama, lack of good management, no training to speak of

I have been working at Tandem Labs

    Pros

The money is good, that's all I can really say is a pro for tandem. And turnover, if you're hoping for an opening one will surely open if you wait.

    Cons

Management and hr thrive on drama, with very few exceptions. Management encourages backbiting, and will throw employees under the bus to better their own situations. There is NO training program, despite what higher ups claim in interviews. You're basically thrown in to sink or swim, and if you're sinking, they throw weights instead of floats.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Add a comprehensive training program to your company, and start caring about your people. The lack of compassion from management is creating a toxic work environment that can't be sustained long term. I would also recommend training your managers on how to be productive managers, not drama royalty who focus on who they can sink next.

I have been working at Tandem Labs

    Pros

Small facility with close team harmony - mid to lower managment as well as fellow associates. All are driven and wanting to produce a great, quality product. Lots of jumping in to help out when possible

    Cons

Senior and upper management, in contrast, minimize and invalidate efforts of team. Solutions offered are negated yet individuals are constantly being held against a firing squad and expected/ demanded to produce unrealist results. Lack of knowledge/ignorance of what the ground troops do complicates working relationships. Directions to business practices can change to polar opposites within 72 hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Any new business must factor in at least 5 years capital to sustain the company until it takes on it's own life. This means periodically increasing resources to accommodate the growing pains. With no infusion of that type and expecting the talent on hand to keep with the increasing business demands, all the while being critical of the talent, does not bode well for the future. Losen the purse strings, allow the company the resources it needs to meet those unrealistic expectations, become knowledgeable of the roles being perform so the team will have respect. Quit speaking "hot" words, lingo, jargin, exec-spec as if it impresses. It does not when you display ignorance.
