Pros
great place to learn the basics of business and retail; wide variety of opportunities to develop career; vibrant and energetic corporate workplace
Cons
expectations are unrealistically high; poor work-life balance; can be difficult to navigate the political waters; very hierarchical; unless in IT, no flexibility in work hours/location
Pros
Target was a phenomenal at developing talent internally. If you can promote internally at Target you can get a job just about anywhere.
Cons
Target does not promote work-life balance or fair pay. It is not worth making $50k a year as an executive working 50-60 hours a week and every holiday.
Advice to Senior Management
I believe that Target needs to recognize that their standards for management are higher than most companies and, thus, recruiting talent from other companies typically ends in two unhappy parties as those recruits are not prepared for the level of work Target requires. Target does a tremendous job promoting internally and typically only the best make it up the ranks. Target should focus more on this internal talent than expending resources and wasting time bringing in external candidates, at premium salaries, just to fire them within a year.
Pros
the pay would be the only reason..it is pretty good
Cons
If you don't give your life to Target then you might as well not work their. I want to bust my butt while at work and when I go home be able to enjoy family and friends instead of constant thoughts of work. I don't feel I should be bothered when I'm not working because my time should be my time, not Target's. I feel you think you are getting set up for success by the amount of training you get, but in actuality you are never prepared and there isn't the help you need when you need it. They just expect you to "figure" it out or "call" somebody. I feel they should spend more time telling us how it "really" is. It is good if you don't have a family or life and you don't mind spending your waking minutes their. What is worse is the hours this year for the holidays. How are we supposed to be happy and enjoy it. Good job if you are single.
Advice to Senior Management
Training needs to be accurate. When you hire somebody, tell them that it is truly difficult. Don't sugarcoat it.
Pros
For someone looking to make 50k right out of college and building a resume in management this is a good place to start. Industry best benefits package.
Cons
Incredibly long hours, not for someone with a family at home. Expect to work min of 50+ hrs per week, if you work overnight expect more like 55-60. You are given about half the.resources necessary to complete your job and can not leave until the job is done.
Advice to Senior Management
Ballence productivity and resource management, if company, sop says it will take 80 ours to complete a task give managers 80 hours worth of resources.
Pros
Great pay, benefits, and sold structure. The work environment is typically positive by way of constructive feedback and recognition at the start of shift.
Cons
Little room for advancement. Workload is very strenuous on the body and can lead to permanent damage. Feedback given to the exempt side is not taken with good intentions. Hourly members are often treated like high school students and are given little information to truly succeed.
Advice to Senior Management
Take feedback with the best intentions. Don't overstep your authority by micro managing employees in the name of best practice. Try to become more creative and inspire your team with your actions not words. Maintain composure and become adaptable to changes when needed.
Pros
Better job than fast food
Friendly employees and managers
Discount
Cons
The pay for the level of work and responsibility is ridiculous
You cannot move very far in the company without a bachelor's degree.
Advice to Senior Management
Target needs to open their eyes to all the talented managers they are losing out on by having a hard and fast requirement of all ETL's and above to have a degree. Hiring a kid straight out of college who has no actual experience leading a team while closing your eyes at experienced sales managers is crazy. Team building, coaching, and management is something you gain through experience, not just a piece of paper.
Pros
Easy interviews, easy job, crosstraining easily available, team member discount, easy to pick up shifts and fill up your schedule.
Cons
Little respect from team leads, impossible to get time off, pointless four hour shifts, poor communication between management and team members.
Advice to Senior Management
Try communicating with your team more. I ha no idea our mission statement had changed and then proceeded to get yelled at for not known it.
Pros
As a mom, there was a lot of schedule flexibility and understanding when a child was sick or I needed to be at a school event.
Cons
Pushing of the Target Credit Card-pleeeeeze! Enough already! Also, working holidays/late nights wasn't so great.
Pros
Fun atmosphere. Upbeat and hip. The job was the same as anywhere else, but the target culture was fun. I found a lot of the policies to be cumbersome, but the overall feeling of the store was always a nice place to walk in to.
Cons
It was frustrating that so many upper level decisions were made by non healthcare professionals. Sometimes you felt you were beating your against the wall with all the stupid thIngs they wanted you to do.
Advice to Senior Management
Let pharmacist make decision that impact the pharmacy. Non healthcare professional just do t get the red tape.
Pros
The culture is all about being fast, fun, and friendly. Customers are referred to as "guests" which sounds more important than simply being called a "customer".
Cons
As far as promotional opportunities go, Target likes to go for recent college graduates instead of experienced employees, whether they have relevant experience or not.
Advice to Senior Management
My advice would be to try to connect more on a personal level with your employees. Communicate with them on level ground instead of acting "above" your employees. They work hard for you and deserve respect.
