    Advice to Management

I like where the company is going with the 3 year plan and how we are getting there.

    Pros

Hours are fairly flexible, some great people to work with, goal setting is encouraged (required actually), pay is decent and benefits are ok.

    Cons

The company laid off 66 employees in July 2014 with no notice and offered only 4 weeks of severance pay to people who had worked there more than 10 years. Half of those laid off were age 50 or over. Positions were "eliminated" but weeks later other people were moved into those positions that supposedly didn't exist anymore. Employees were required to attend an annual All Team Retreat and perform an impromptu skit on stage in front of the whole company. There were many other forced "culture" activities that are too numerous and ridiculous to mention here. It is not a normal work environment.

    Advice to Management

Don't ask employees for their ideas if you have no intention of listening. You were given answers to every question raised about how to increase sales, how to retain consultants, how to reduce expenses, and how to turn a profit. But did you implement any of our suggestions that could have made a huge difference for the company? No. Instead you listened to your paid advisors and laid off 66 good workers and made life miserable for those who were left to pick up the pieces.

    Pros

there were many, such as life-balance, good pay (depending on your name)

    Cons

Forced fun-you need to be an extrovert to excel at this company

    Advice to Management

The management of this company was unable to take the company to the next level. Unfortunately people laid off paid the price for that. I was told management would be working to hire back those laid off-then within a couple of weeks there were postings for jobs held by those people. Imagine being told your job was eliminated, then you find out someone has moved into your position. I don't consider that a stance of integrity. Development opportunities were given to favorites.

    Pros

Years ago when I started working at the Tastefully Simple Headquarters I was proud to have my job and felt so blessed to work for a company with such authentic values and a meaningful mission.

    Cons

Over time the company got way too corporate, they had way more people in management than necessary and way more processes and procedures than an actual big corporation. Team members in many areas weren't allowed to stretch and learn, too much process in the way. It wasn't much fun any more, and forcing the culture on everyone takes the fun and authenticity out of it as well.

    Advice to Management

Offer more freedom and empowerment to the employees. You claim you hire only the best talent, well then allow the people to utilize their talents. There's no need for that much micro management. Offer more to your clients. Tastefully Simple has absolutely nothing to compete with Pampered Chef. If you want to be a household name, offer "gotta have" products like Pampered Chef does, and make better price points for the products to make them more attractive and affordable to the average consumer.

    Pros

I was given the freedom and flexibility to take on new responsibilities, which allowed me to enter a discipline that is now in high demand.

    Cons

The culture is geared toward extroverts and could be over the top at times.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to appeal to the new tech savvy, sophisticated consumer. Look at consumer behavior versus listening to what the fans are saying.

    Pros

I've been to so many of these parties, selling was a natural thing to do.

    Cons

Once you've had parties with someone, it's hard to book them again for 6-12 months. Also, when doing a party, you'll always have people who "want to do a party" but never call you back or schedule their party. It can be quite frustrating.

    Advice to Management

Don't have required minimum sales. Some quarters I make enough to cover my sales for the entire year, but if I go one quarter under $400, I can't continue with the company.

    Pros

    Talented staff, nice office space

    Cons

Extremem micro-management from the owners, run like a kingdom with the founders as the queens, incredible overkill on processes and procedures, the sense of "family" that is pushed is on overkill and not reality.

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees knowledge and expertise, stop trying to be involved in every decision, start seeing how painful you are making the lives of your "team members". (this will never happen because they can't see the damage they are doing they think they have to have the final decision on everything.)
