I have been working at Tata Consultancy Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

This company offers vast domains to work in, it has operations in almost all the countries of the world including all the domains an IT can think of. With over 350,000 employees it gives immense opportunity to learn people management. This company really provides a very high job safety and stability even during the time of recession of 2008-09.

    Cons

The growth is slow, even the process for salary hike is unsatisfactory to many. Resource might be doing good but the voice will not be heard till highest level. The company doesn't differentiate between valuable resource and invaluable resource which is good at one side and bad at other side. This also leads to non-competitiveness among resources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The upper management to desperately look into the appraisal process which actually starts with fair practice but at the end becomes the mercy/attitude of supervisor. Also the management should look more deeply in compensation and benefits side providing fair share every year. It should also look for high attrition rate.

I have been working at Tata Consultancy Services full-time for less than a year

    Pros

They will pay aggressively for the talent to look competent.

    Cons

This company is the utter bile of consulting firms. Their internal network and infrastructure is weak and so thoroughly unusable over 60% of everyones time is used compensating for bad infrastructure spent time nursing admin work. Therefore this company has created for itself a personality of hiring lazy people who feel their work is to attend meetings and complete admin work to compliance. Everything to artificially stuff a stat sheet, nothing to provide any substance or content.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to school. Learn what it means to build a service top down of substance.

I have been working at Tata Consultancy Services full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

TCS has few important pros : (1) Great place to learn as the learning opportunities are many and many colleagues are helpful too. (2) Good training which at times feels to be long. (3) Established brand name (4) Good onsite opportunities more for younger lot!. (5) Worklife balance is not there in many accounts and roles (6) Reasonable benefits in India and US (7) Presence in many domains - an opportunity to move laterally and learn (8) large number of employees more than 250000. (9) Great support staff in Learning and development, Travel, Finance and HR at working level.

    Cons

Many Cons (1) Lower and skewed promotional opportunities. All ills associated with a bad HR program can be seen here . (2) Heavy middle management which mars upward move after a level. By then your resume is unmarketable !!. (3) Excessive importance to numbers ($$$) and Client partners/BRMs roles, making many folks to work for that role forgetting technical skills, (4) Roles like BRM PM etc decided more on political factors and sycophancy than real talent. (5) Lot of power in hands of BRMs/Client partners making them act like demi gods ! (6) Skewed compensation - India expats paid much lower than local recruits, Even an expat Greencard holder is not paid US salary (7) Boasts of CMM, PCMM level processes but many actions are decided case by case to suit the ISU fiefdoms.(8) Horrible appraisal system, You get rated based on goals and attributes but then get dumped into band buckets based on personal whims, judgements and feelings at the end of the year by a team over snack and coffee!!!. You may get 4 in goals but if you are not in good books or even moved out of the account by the company you may end up in a D which cuts your salary , perks and mainly enthusiasm. You can be a A guy all along but that does not help!. Worst point is every one is aware of this malady but still it is practiced and taken as a yardstick for many decisions. Every appraisal spreads a wave of negative energy in the company .(9) No defined career path for technologists as they get dominated by BRMs, GLs, which makes many talented folks disappointed impacting their work or leads to attrition. (10) High level of red tapism which has increased with creation of ISUs by leaps and bounds.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    (1) Please "walk the talk" of CMMi, PCMM, Tata code of conduct for ethics . (2) Since the company runs due to effort of every individual, please recognize the talents and nurther them. (3) Create more delivery focused organization to support the sales of BRMs, a BRM is not demigod or a robot or a magician to take up all roles this dependency is ruining associates' morale as well as dilutes system as many functions get done by others for BRM to get undue favors why not make it systematic?. GNDM is jmaking many associates burn out due to lower quotes and push on using trainees than experienced consultants (3) Don't be pennywise and pound foolish, Good financial management is important but not at the cost of associates' pay and expenses when top brass enjoy huge packages. (4) Make many roles like BRM GL Delivery lead etc rotational so that the clamor for that role and associated perks decreases. (5) Make GC holders, US local employees why the ISUs and Client partners play havoc with that - enjoying a small raise in P&L at the cost of this is Not a ethical code of conduct! while local recruitment at high cost is going on other side.(6) Understand that the wide geographical spread needs more efforts at oversight too so reduce red tapism . Empower people,
