I have been working at Tata Consultancy Services full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. Management is willing to adapt to newer technologies
    2. Employees are hardworking and rewarded well compared to market.
    3. Strong work ethics and good working environment
    4. Good job security for high performers and achievers.

    Cons

1.large Organisation has led to numerous bureaucratic channels. Slow adaption of policies. Remove the "one size fits all" mentality. Different markets and practices need different policies.
    2. Management needs to change the old model of build/support to a dynamic thought leadership based strategy.
3.Need to hire and tap more senior talent particularly in delivery and sales to grow into high value strategic consulting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Focus on increasing brand awareness and be aggressive in recruiting experienced talent.
    2. Start establishing strong relationships with senior business stakeholders (CFOs , functional VPs and COOs) but also continuing to focus on client IT leadership to provide high value consulting. Need executive connect all round to win strategic deals. TCS has capabilities to provide best in class services similar to big 4 in non IT related services as well.
    3. Continue being aggressive by eliminating the bureaucratic channels ( adapt best practices, create policies that increases speed to business results).

I worked at Tata Consultancy Services full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Short term, the pay can be good

    Cons

Long working hours, early start at 7 am and sometimes work am till 10 pm. Even sometimes you are expected to take calls at 10:30 pm! The business is evolved about ensuring success for India based employees, and in the U.S. there are no career growth opportunities. They "relocate" you to the project site. You have to fight to get expenses covered! Again, if you are Indian you get ahead. For Americans, they treat you like crap. You never know what's going on (or who is coming from India to take your job -- cheaper cost for them).

The policy of TCS mgmt who have been in the company for a long time is to keep employees "in the dark," and use cheap bids. Bad quality solutions is the result. Expect to be disgraced by your "offshore managers" on daily basis for anything and everything. The company is borderline unethical in business and with employees. Their HR department is almost non existent. In the U.S. they lie outright or at least "play the system" to get what the company orders!

They layed off around 300-500 people in the U.S. in December, Jan-15 "without notification" and for no reason, as the business model is project based, and hence they treat their employees as contractors. The problem with that is they blame it on the employee for "non performance" or "unallocation."

In the long haul it's better to get a job paying less, as is more secure. One that will respect your career growth needs, will not reject training requests, and will not piggy back off you, till they get an offshore replacement to come state side and replace you. Believe it!

Oh, and don't expect to make friends with anyone in the company unless you are Indian. Believe it!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not lie, about laying off people in the U.S, and anything else for that matter. You layed employees off who are good performers and were allocated to projects. However, on certain projects all of sudden you ordered to "release" employees, and then RMG (the group that is supposed to allocate to another project) went in the dark, w/o placing you on a project. And then boom layoff! How do you expect to gain respect that way? Did you think about financial loss to those employees? You gave the minimum for the severance package which is one paycheck!

Do not take projects without having skilled employees, and go off hiring people in the U.S. promising "full time" career while in fact you are just hiring them as contractors for a single project. Believe it!

I have been working at Tata Consultancy Services full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Kind hearted people in general. Relaxed work environment. Exposure to different opportunities via RFP's is an option

    Cons

US geography is run pretty much based on India policies. No US infrastructure based on what is best practice for US employees that are US citizens. The majority of US employees are people from India on Visa's. Key positions - IT manager, Payroll Manager and Supervisors, are filled with employees from India - meaning they are not permanent employees so they lack the long term vision required to improve a department. It is great on one had that individuals get the opportunity to hold such positions but damaging for the health of the department and company. Lacks forward vision with no desire to improve internal policies.

The company pinches pennies like no other. Basic office supplies and generic tools that one uses to do their job are absent. Some of the offices need to be remodeled or simply relocate to better facilities. If you want to work for an organization that will nickel and dime you to death, then this is the place to come. Be warned, there is NO CORPORATE CARD. If you are required to travel, make sure you have enough cash/credit cards to float to cover the expenses until you get reimbursed. Spend YOUR money for a BILLION DOLLAR company then wait to get it back. If you are on a good project and the approver is diligent then consider yourself lucky. It can take WEEKS almost months to get reimbursed. India employees do not have to live by the US credit system so credit ratings do not have an affect on them as they are not permanent residence only temporaryBe warned when hired of the type of role as you may be required to relocate for every position which is absolutely ridiculous. That may work in India but certainly is not attractive or acceptable to US Citizens and ones raising families. One organization that is accepting of that in the United States is Department of Defense - US ARMED FORCES - ALL BRANCHES. people clearly know this when enlisting that this is a constant requirement but they are by far compensated for this and their families are taken care of in ways that TCS has no clue about.

IT Services is less than adequate. One person onsite to address computer issues, one for new laptops and one person opening envelopes to pay bills or something. The simplest issue- password reset requires multiple steps, waiting and even create a help desk ticket. You will be required to create a ticket for everything everything everything everything everything everything the ONE onsite IT employee is out, then they have to borrow from another office in the area to cover and split between the office locations.

At some point the employee retention and lack thereof will have to resonate. At some point, the fact the you hire people and before they can start they are reconsidering and rejecting offers will have to open some eyes. They cannot stand on " we have over 300,000 employees" as a excuse for their antiquated and 1800 century policies. Some of the 300,000 employees may simply be opening envelopes or re-stocking tea bags at the office pantry locations. Very little is in the current day and age, which will soon be the Year 2015, as far as policy and procedure. "One Size Does Not Fit All"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seperate the US from India. Hire US Citizens or people with vision to run the US geography. Improve benefits, offer tuition reimbursement, improve the travel policies and get a tool for online booking. Implement cost centers to manage expenses and remove the human approvals from the scenario.
