    I worked at Tata Steel

    Pros

Technology operating in a challenging and breath-taking environment that has to be experienced to be believed. There was something different and special about it. It was a bit laid back, but with a strong focus on safety.

    Cons

The environment is not everybody's cup of tea. It is physically harsh, dusty, dirty, noisy and of course, at times uncomfortably hot. It's not for the faint hearted and you are surrounded by danger. The culture is also hard, rough and quite frankly intolerant of the "too clever" or "not practical". Graduate/professional/academic types can be given a hard time. Promotion prospects are not good and when I was there it was first in first out. To go up, you had to wait for someone to leave. Career development was poor. In short, the general environment is something you need to consider before working in a steel works. It is brash. Full of "industrial language". And often crude. Not for the posh at all!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's a steel works and that's it. You could try to compensate by breaking in gently "good" people and reward them as they adapt and get used to it. Other than that, good luck because it is what it is, and I personally hated it!

I have been working at Tata Steel full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

They seemed to be in a hurry to just hire up anyone ASAP. They did not consider proper conduct or validity of points in the Group discussion.

    Cons

Did not even read the form they asked us to fill. Completely technical interview yet such steep shortlisting from meager Group discussion: 24 to 4!

I have been working at Tata Steel full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great past...which the company and employees take pride in

    Cons

Cronyism is rampant...Senior Management considers themselves nothing less than God leaving you with very little freedom to act

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hopefully with New MD at the helm of affairs, things will improve. But again have very little hope with the new man in the President Role will be able to motivate the people around him. Past MD was simply a poor example of putting an incompetent person on leadership position and on almost all values he falls way short..Hopefully the new MD will bring change as fresh whiff of air...

I worked at Tata Steel full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Ethical.
Provides good facilities for the sort of places that people are deputed.
There is still the influence of the Tata values which prevents the organization from descending into utter chaos

    Cons

Extremely political senior management. Decisions are made to appease higher ups rather than on the merit of its value to the business. The company functions totally on favoritism and very strong university lobby groups exist within the organization. In the process of building an image of being inclusive (as opposed to elitist) the company has lost its focus on excellence, hiring candidates from all sorts of places. Below average salaries are another issue. I personally never got the professionally enriching experience that I signed up for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Complete revamp of the senior management is needed.

One can get out of office whenever he wants.

    Cons

    So many.
    1) Desparity at it its highest.
    2) Salary varies from 30k - 50k in entry level.
    3) Some chiefs are very incompetent.
    Hardly anything to learn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Tata Steel

    Pros

This place will help you in achieving amazing work life balance. Really good place for metallurgists and chemical engineers. Can grow to really great heights if you are at right place at right time.

    Cons

Oraganization carries a big baggage of 100 year legacy. Typical manufacturing mindset. People are not really willing to share knowledge. More of establishment based so less importance is given to human resource utilization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need a drastic change of mind to clear the baggage of history. Need to build a performance based system. Need to weed out many wrong practices.

I have been working at Tata Steel

    Pros

Job experience and learning. You'll get enough opportunities to learn if it's free of cost.

    Cons

    No training whatsoever.
Poor Pay Package and no benefits considering most of the employees are native welsh, problem for outsiders who want to save money staying away from home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer more money otherwise you'll not be able to stop brain drain.
