Trust No One

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Tdcj

ProsBenefits, Job security, Experience. Stepping stone into criminal justice field. If you are part of the "in crowd" you may get to promote faster, and have nice duty stations.

ConsCheaters, Snakes, Employees will stab you in the back. Some units have no heat and no air conditioning. You will be locked up with inmates most of the day. You may become an inmate yourself. Lots of employees sleeping with each other and the inmates.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire those with degrees to be supervisors. Don't promote your friends and family if they are not qualified. Stop sleeping with the officers.

If you have any type of work ethic or drive, stay away from TDCJ.

Lieutenant of Correctional Officers (Former Employee)
Abilene, TX

I worked at Tdcj full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe only pro I can think of is, at the end of ones life when they look back on the experiences they have had, they could say I survived one of the most miserable places to work.

ConsPoor quality of employees. Low pay. Poor management that gets worse each year. Being a state agency, you are at the mercy of political agendas from elected officials.

Advice to Senior ManagementMost of the managers now only care about themselves and those who stroke their ego. their is no advice they would be willing to hear, so why bother.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Good solid job. Watch out for policy and mild favoritism.

ProsCo-workers were very often dedicated and knowledgeable. Very safety oriented

ConsRank very often did not follow their own policy, to many complaints had to be sent to HQ in Huntsville.

Advice to Senior ManagementPolicy changes need to be covered better, more checks on the higher ups.

Administration should lead by example

Clerk (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Tdcj full-time for more than 5 years

ProsYou can take earned time off easily.

ConsThere are new policies expected to be implemented weekly. Often you implement a policy and the next week it changes. Sometimes you can get into trouble with this fact if you are not careful.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn your policy and lead by example. Quit trying to date everyone that you work with.

I worked at Tdcj full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat Retirement and benefits are good!
Office hours are great!
Rotating Officers provide a chance to meet new, great people, plus keeps the corruption down.

ConsWardens that hire their unqualified and undeserving friends for every opening...promising them jobs before they ever post.
Out of date equipment making it harder to do the job required.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe fair and consistent. Quit hiring your buddies and hire the person most qualified.
