Former Employee - Interpreter and Translator in Houston, TX

I worked at TechTrans International full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Unique subject matter. Talented staff. Limitless opportunties for professional growth for both interpreters and translators. Unsurpassed practical exposure. Generous compensation by industry standards. Professional company, not a mom-and-pop start-up or a freelancer free-for-all. Really impressive international footprint and record of achievement.

    Cons

Easy on slackers. Personal attitudes get in the way at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote wisely. Seek out, cultivate and recruit talent.

I have learned a lot, but the working environment, and management has people so stressed out.

Current Employee - Not the Best Job In the World in Houston, TX

I have been working at TechTrans International

    Pros

The experience of working with NASA and other pertinent clients they have is great.

    Cons

Everyone is so afraid of making mistakes; someone is fired or quits about once a month (just in one department). Co-workers run to management and throw each other under the bus when something is not exactly the way they would have done it. It's a very tense situation and it can take a toll on one's well being after awhile.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to what's going on between co-workers. Stop writing people up and firing the good ones, and give praise and incentives to the achievers and stop looking only at the negative. To the new manager, no one likes the micromanaging.

TechTrans International is an incredibly empowering place to work. Management listens when I have an idea.

I have been working at TechTrans International

    Pros

TechTrans always promotes from within the Company - the President started out as a Translator, the NASA Manager started out as a receptionist. Incentives abound - 'on the spot awards', innovation incentives, annual President's Award, company anniversary recognition.

    Cons

Because of the sensitivity of the work, we cannot work from home.

Work can be interesting, but there are very few advancement opportunities and an inflexible management style.

Former Employee - Logistics Specialist in Houston, TX
Former Employee - Logistics Specialist in Houston, TX

    I worked at TechTrans International

    Pros

Although demanding, the type of work performed by a Logistics Specialist at this company is dynamic and is definitely never boring. There are many highly skilled and talented people among the employees. With a few exceptions, managers do not hover over employees and do not micromanage. The overall working environment is relaxed and friendly. There are standard yearly reviews and pay increases. This company may be good for someone who is just beginning their professional career.

    Cons

The biggest cons include an inflexible management style and lack of advancement opportunities, which leads to an incredibly high turnover rate. In the Logistics department promotions are extremely rare, practically nonexistent. Instead of promotion, good employees may be "congratulated" with more responsibilities without any changes in pay rate or title. In addition, an overzealous HR department takes over some of the employee questions that should be left to the discretion of managers. This makes it impossible to negotiate on even the most insignificant issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company should consider adapting a more personal approach to its employees. Incentives could be beneficial in improving employee morale and satisfaction and in decreasing the high turnover rate. These incentives could include more flexible work schedules, additional time off, and professional training.

    Current Employee - Interpreter
    Current Employee - Interpreter

I have been working at TechTrans International

    Pros

TechTrans has some really interesting projects for interpreters, particularly in the field of aerospace. New interpreters can gain invaluable experience working in both simultaneous and consecutive modes at higly technical meetings, astronaut training sessions, and other assignments. This company may be great for a person who is just starting out in the field of interpretation and hopes to become a free-lancer in the future.

    Cons

TechTrans has a high turnover rate because of management's inflexible attitudes and lack of advancement opportunities. Initiative is frequently discouraged and promotion decisions are not always rational. The company is dominated by Russian immigrants, which has a certain impact on the corporate culture. This company may not be the best choice for someone who is a high achiever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A more personal approach to personnel may benefit the company in the long run. Give more incentives to the employees and they will reward you with loyalty and hard work.
