    Pros

    Massive organisation with lots of opportunities for career progression

    Cons

    Can feel isolated in certain departments, no or limited interaction with other departments. No competancies to strive towards to climb the ladder.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Competancy scheme for all engineers not just those working in the business units. A lot of engineers in the maintenance and operations departments become disillusioned with there chance of promotions so end up leaving or heading to the business units so they dont get forgotten about

    Pros

    Good opportunities for career progression and further learning.
    Not micro-managed, given a good level of autonomy.
    Good opportunities for working abroad.
    Good salary package

    Cons

    Badly organised and overworked staff
    Short sighted approach to engineering
    The tail wags the dog in this company. (e.g. support services such as IT can dictate operation of the engineers)
    Lack of transparency, management withhold negative information and give the impression that things are better than they actually are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The company should go 'back to basics' and focus on the engineering services delivered. Emphasis should be placed on delivering high quality engineering. Support services such as IT/facilities should be reminded that they are there to support the engineering functions of the business.

    Pros

    All you need is a little motivation and you can outperform many of the other employees and get yourself noticed.

    Cons

    VERY relaxed environment. There seems to be a complete loss of overview. Employees drink tea and chit chat. Deadlines are not met because of this, which stresses out senior management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get some control on the employees and make sure that they are performing according to deadlines. More support for graduates that are motivated and fresh. Don't let them fall into the same routine of procrastination as many of the other employees.

    Pros

    experience in the Oil and Gas sector

    Cons

    There was so much office politics going on you could barely get a thing done! I quickly found that there were unwritten protocols on who you had to cc into an email (which ended up being the world and his dog). Some people who had nothing to do with your job being your boss cause they had been there longer than you, regardless of if they knew anything about your position, goals or basically anything you were doing. This turns into a nightmare when you receive no training from the company, then have to train your supposed boss on your job. Asking a question that is part of your job turns into you challenging someone and results in several discussions with threaten behaviour from supervisors.
    It was a horrible place to work, every corner you turn there is someone trying to stick a knife in your back or get one over on you. Little wonder they have such a high staff turn over, clearly people with any brains work this out very quickly and then leave asap.
    Even there HR department is useless. Taking grievances there will only result in a hostility and increased tension in the work place.
    If you actually enjoy getting your work done without either have a rather brown nose and having your spine removed or having a rather weighty target on your back I wouldn't consider working here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    truly analyse your current hierarchy, look to see who is working for you, what talents they have and what they can contribute to the company and promote people on this basis rather than the length of time they have been working for your company.

    less structured, hence moving to different fields is possible

    as there is less structure, there is not a formal development path and one's development is in the hands of individual employees and managers.

    I worked at Technip UK (Aberdeen)

    Pros

    The majority of the people there are really good to work for and with and the location is easy to get to. Technip does offer lots of opportunities and career progression is encouraged and their Graduate Scheme is excellent.

    Cons

    If you have an approachable Manager, your time there can be really rewarding career, work and money wise. However if you are unfortunate and end up working for a Manager who is not interested or concerned about his team then don't bother going to HR as they won't do anything to help - other than hold the door open for your exit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't promote people just because they have been there for a long time. They may have the skills, aptitude and experience but they don't have the necessary people skills for making them the Manager that gets the best from his team. Look at them as a whole package; not one that ticks some of the boxes.
