  5. The best of times. The worst of times.

    Pros

Very good mission. Excellent neighborhood in Brooklyn. The staff was kind. There were a lot of people to help. Well known organization.

    Cons

A lot. Staff underpaid and undertrained. Food very poor quality. Housing and office buildings were in poor condition. No one got to know the neighbors. Most people just remain on campus.

    Advice to Management

Have staff with real world buisness experience come in and train other staff. If money is not coming in through the donors, apply for grants.

I worked at Teen Challenge full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It is a great opportunity to work with people in need. It is a good venue to learn time management and teamwork. They are good about providing support for staff during trying personal experiences. Time off is available for extenuating circumstances, and staff receive a 1-2 week vacation each year depending on seniority. Training takes place continuously as needed for all employees. Teen Challenge makes sure that all staff participate in continuing education and personal development in all areas.

    Cons

The organization is usually stretched to the limit like most non-profits. Leadership is strong, and individuals are prepared for advancement through continuing education and personal growth workshops and seminars. Compensation is on a par with other non-profits doing similar work.

I worked at Teen Challenge full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Helps you to help others. Turns lives around and builds a family of friends.

    Cons

Can become a hide out for those not willing to live in the world.

    Advice to Management

Consider running a working house outside of the program, where residents can live and work in the world outside of Teen Challenge. That way they can practice being a light in a dark world, with the added help of being a part of the program and sharing their transitional issues.
