Pros
Great operational management. Close knit team and excellent teamwork
Cons
small company so upward mobility limited
Advice to Senior Management
listen to the technical teams more :)
Pros
Excellent employee base, as a rule, those who are not managers have an excellent work ethic and are working hard to make the company successful.
Cons
Ineptitude among Sr. Managers and higher prevents affective forward planning to prevent easily foreseeable negative outcomes from becoming the rule.
Advice to Senior Management
Update your Nortel resumes, The company has been sold and the ratio of managers to non managers can no longer be supported.
Pros
23 days of PTO/sick to start.
Cons
Sales oversells and management lacks.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't let sales dictate solutions.
Pros
1) Competative salary
2) Knowledgeable employees
3) Good intangble beneits
Cons
1) Long Hours - Includes weekend work
Pros
Relaxed work environment with a good work to life balance. Very nice building and lab facilities with good individual coffee makers and a decent cafeteria
Cons
no feeling of camaraderie between team members. No one ate lunch together so there was very little bonding. People were assigned to projects not based on their skill set but on their connections
Advice to Senior Management
Stop creating complicated products for single customers. do more work to encourage team building and increase employee satisfaction. Spend more time reviewing employees contributions and provide them with feedback
Pros
The company has a good bonus program when one is acheived. The pay and benefits are also very good - some of the best work available.
Cons
Lack vision in the management levels. Tekelec is turning to third party hardware solutions to become more of a software company. I fear the lack of hardware control and reduced hardware quality and reliability will be detrimental to the customer and to Tekelec in the long run.
Pros
Benefits are good
Company seems stable
New technology is interesting
Great customer base
Cons
Not enough staff to meet workload
Too much worry about spending, budgets
Former Nortel employees dominate
Unprofessional environment
Advice to Senior Management
Open yourself to some non-Nortel ideas about approaches to business
Rid yourself of the former Nortel management - they are like pack animals. Their loyalty to each other instead of the company is going to kill your business.
Frank is a good leader; his talent could be used at a larger company.
Pros
Compensation, bonus structure, reserved stock were pretty good. Executive management is spending money to try and improve relations with mid and lower level employees.
Cons
Very little sharing of information from top down. Focuses mainly on bean counting to make decisions. Constantly reorganizing, buying and selling parts of company. Age of average employee is older, not real receptive to new ideas. Lots of struggles between empires. The sales organization maintains too much power, so much that that the product try to include everything in the pipeline. There are not enough resources to develop the product. These seems to be divisions and structural problems within the product management areas.
Advice to Senior Management
1. Push back on sales and let product management develop a product for the market not individual sales opportunities 2. Don't focus so much an bean counting and start looking at the bigger market picture. 3. Put some resources into development to create a better product. 4. Get rid of over dominant managers who are not team players and just focusing holding on to their empire, company suffers from very poor team work ethic.
Pros
We are in a recession and it's a job. Nice benefits package.
Cons
Very disorganized group of people. Not a professional work environment. Software Development teams are run "by the seat of the pants" without any regard to organization or professionalism. If you are a Software Hacker, then you would enjoy working here. However, if you are a professional Software Developer, then the level of disorganization would frustrate you. You would never get the chance to advance your career or be permitted to make a significant contribution. Although, you would get paid.
Software team leaders exhibit an attitude similar to Big Blue when Big Blue was going down. They produce what they desire rather than producing what customers require.
Advice to Senior Management
What could I possibly offer to any manager of a company that is this disorganized?
Pros
I found Tekelec to be flexible, and I have had the opportunity to be involved with several projects. I have had the opportunity to work with some very brilliant people.
Cons
It surprises me that for being such a small company, each division has no idea what the other division is doing. It is easy to be left out of the loop if one does not have contacts within other divisions.
Advice to Senior Management
Tekelec needs to have a more formalized method of communicating between divisions and extending that information to employees. The formality may help keep employees better informed.
