    Pros

The biggest perk to working at Tekserve on the bottom level (as an intake specialist or cashier) is the employee pricing at company cost MINUS a small additional percentage. That is to say that every time you buy something from Tekserve, they pay for a small amount of it for you, losing money, because they realize that their employees should be able to experiment with the products.

    Cons

Everyone who comes into this store is automatically furious because more often than not, their computer is broken, and if it is not they are surrounded by people who DO have broken computers. It is only human nature for them to aim that anger at you, the employee. I would say the tone of the employees in general is one of begrudging tolerance towards the job. Pay is very low for bottom level employees at an unlivable $12/hr in the middle of Manhattan.

    Advice to Management

The customer facing employees would feel less like they are trapped if they make higher wages, which they deserve.

  2. You need to make something out of it, as management won't help you with this thing called a "career"

    Pros

You meet a lot of great people and if you're willing to learn can pick up some amazing skills.

    Cons

Management is a joke - it's a mixture of micromanagement, and each of your multiple managers not knowing what the other one has said. They constantly contradict and use you as a middle man, which as an employee at a company that fires large groups of people every few months - it's a little disturbing. Fear of speaking out or trying to make positive change, as the few who have tried that beforehand have been mysteriously fired under unclear circumstances.

Service management is more interested in passing work off and sitting at a desk, avoiding customers, than helping their staff. You're basically on your own and have to claw for anything.

    Advice to Management

Find new management, actually attempt to train people, make the employees feel valued and that they can grow with the job.

  3. Overworked, under appreciated staff working in negative, chaotic environment somehow manages to make public happy.

    Pros

Great learning experience with amazing coworkers. Founders are incredible people and the company has a great history and reputation.

    Cons

Middle management doesn't seem to value or respect employees. Majority of the extremely talented people who worked there (some over a decade) have all been fired or quit within the last 2-3 years. No room for growth. No fair pay, hard to get raise even when various high level people in the company acknowledge your worth. Very negative environment with most people unhappy. Management's micromanaging and arbitrary changes get in the way of doing and improving at your job. A lot of good people are let go for petty, personal reasons.

    Advice to Management

It may be too little too late at this point. When the entire Service staff has consistent complaints about management, maybe they should be replaced instead of the staff.

    Pros

Talented coworkers, hours were not too late.

    Cons

Unstable employment. Although I left of my own accord, most of my talented coworkers lost their jobs, as they are constantly downsizing. There's a reason they've broken off into 2 separate businesses now. Corporate Sales is now known as T2 Computing because it's the only semi-successful area of the business. Service is going by the wayside. This ship is sinking.

    Advice to Management

Learn to respect loyal employees. Your mistreatment of your employees is known throughout the industry and in a place like Manhattan, consumers take that seriously.

    Pros

Great place to learn and get your skills honed, lots of untapped talent

    Cons

Glass ceiling, micro-mismanagement, no structure, low moral rampant

    Advice to Management

Listen and respect your talented employees, show appreciation of good work with bonuses and raises instead of rewarding with more work

    Pros

Opportunity to learn. Cool people to work with. Great benefits. Did I mention cool people to work with? (one of the biggest perks)

    Cons

Mismanaged. Broken promises from CEOs. No chances of increased wages (even with the addition of more responsibility and change of position). No job security.

    Advice to Management

Give employees a career advancement road map. Recognize talent and try to keep it!

    Pros

Talented staff with a great deal of knowledge to dispense.
Most departments offer excellent work life balance.
Great employee discount program on 3rd party products.
Tekserve owners care about their local community and donate time and money to many charities!!!

    Cons

Poor training & development, no career path, MALE DOMINATED environment, leadership has poor people skills and no management training, only one HR director for a staff of 300+/-, poor communication and no consistency between departments. Operating the store w/an archaic FileMaker system that is frustratingly ineffective.

Change does not come easy or happen quickly in this company!

    Advice to Management

A happy employee equals a happy customer, invest in your team growth!

    Pros

Good health care, well respected brand, very good employee purchase policy.

    Cons

This company was started by two engineer types a long time ago and has gotten very big, but never developed any management culture. When I was there, there was still no real understanding of the role of management; managers simply handed out the orders to employees. Employees across the board felt completely unsupported by their managers. HR was, in some ways, almost hostile to employees. Most notably due to a policy of waiting 90 days after a promotion before an employee even discussed what their new salary would look like.

The original founders of the company still have complete control and one of them is very erratic. There were several sudden, high profile firings when I was there and employees had a habit of just 'disappearing' without explanation.

    Advice to Management

reconfigure your attitude to one of supporting employee growth and transparency.
