Hard work and loyalty does not pay off - 'who you know' and being one of the 'good ole boys' does

    Pros

As announced Oct’14, Tektronix Communications is being acquired by Netscout with expected closing 1Q’15. The combined company will leave any competitors in the network monitoring niche far behind. The pay and benefits are competitive in the Dallas telecom industry. Location at Bush Tollway and Independence in Plano is a convenient commute from many nice towns and close to other telecom companies. Facility is new and spacious but lacks a substantial cafeteria for eating and gathering from different departments. Employees are great with a lot of talent and technical expertise. It's fun to be the leader in your market. The coming Netscout culture may be better than the current TekComm Danaher-driven culture.

    Cons

Since TekComm was acquired by Danaher, the focus has been on short term financial metrics, starving investment in R&D and failing to invest in developing their employees or providing career paths. There is lack of timely decision making and accountability by top exec management when needed – are not addressing HR and political issues raging among the ranks - this due to the uncertainty and mistrust created by annual layoffs, regular re-organizations. near constant changing of processes without stabilizing the prior changes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Address the 'cons' listed above, adopt the Netscout culture during integration of the companies, pay attention to your employees by providing feedback more often than at annual performance reviews, continue to work on improving employee recognition. Champion your employees for success and you will have a successful company with happy customers.

I worked at Tektronix Communications as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

    You get a pay check.

If you LOVE being micromanaged on a daily basis then you will just LOVE . . . :Love . . . . . Love working here.

    Cons

The department I worked for seemed unwilling to accept new ideas and suggestions from highly skilled, trained, industry experienced workers; as they prefer to do things the way they've always done them.

Offered training of company's product line was a joke. They need to offer training for all new hire and contractors as soon as they employee or contractor starts. Waiting to provide training material 2 weeks prior to contracting ending is unreal and unprofessional.

Not enough qualified SMEs on staff for new hires to seek out assistance - so for the most part new hires and contractors are on your own.

Once you start, be prepared to provide weekly status reports and then by the 3 week there they will start asking for daily status reports. Most of your day will now be developing your daily report instead of working on the project for which you were first hired. Think micro-management times 10. You submit your report and dang if it isn't 3 hours after walking in the next morning, they want you to compete another daily status report.

I worked at Tektronix Communications full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

For the most part, good working level employees.

    Cons

Management is obsessed with pleasing parent company's (Danaher) fanatical adherence to business process tools (DBS). I should have paid closer attention to the previous posts on glassdoor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hopefully the NetScout acquisition/merger will give some relief from the draconian DBS overlords.

I have been working at Tektronix Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Family like atmosphere. Fast paced, constantly evolving.

    Cons

Strategic initiatives that trickle down to the implementers constantly in flux. Danaher corporate overhead and processes forced upon the business unit are not good fit. Very short term bottom line focus due to Danaher culture. Will sacrifice long term strategic benefits for short term gains. Lots of cronyism. Many cases moving up depends on who you know versus what you know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to the people who actually know what they are talking about.
