I worked at Tele Atlas North America

    Pros

People were great and there was a shared spirit to get things done. Felt like we were contributing to the world's need for navigation.
Strong effort to bridge the US-Europe culture divide by both sides. Was a big problem at first, but great strides were made.

    Cons

Not innovative enough - always getting distracted by short term map fixes and not creating disruptive products.
Culture clash between Americas and Europe, though it was improving.
Dysfunctional product management leadership, though core team was doing a great job.
TomTom acquisition significantly changed dynamic and made company much more euro-centric.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to pare company to a few core markets, perhaps even spin off the GIS business from the PNAV & Automotive sides. This would allow more flexibility for targted product innovation rather than spreading resources too thin across multiple product segments.

    Pros

    - Good culture (open door, work/life balance)
    - Good review process
    - Nice benefits package

    Cons

    - Small groups can mean difficulty moving up
    - Management can be old fashioned about work from home
    - Mediocre compensation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

TA was bought by Tom Tom so it's different management now then when I was there. Overall, I would say keep listening to the employees.

    Pros

Great benefits, nice people all around. Some of the projects I worked on were challenging and state-of-the-art. Management does care about employees.

    Cons

Things started going downhill once TomTom bought the company. Every issue was framed with european vs ameican way of doing things( TomTom is a european company). The approach used could be summarized as penny wise and pound foolish. Lot of talented staff were let go without any thought about its consequences.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't sell your soul to please TomTom management. They bought you becuase they needed you more and not the other way around. The hardwork and culture of innovation made Tele Atlas( and GDT before) what it is today.

I worked at Tele Atlas North America

    Pros

Laid back work environment, great benefits.

    Cons

Low Pay. Most DMT's are low-ambition locals, and management pays little attention to them. I was stuck doing the same work for two years despite showing initiative and ambition. Also present were the usual annoying office things that exists everywhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try harder to differentiate the genuinely good ideas from the Technicians from all of the annoying complaints. Some of us were quite capable and motivated, but felt stuck on the bottom rung.

I worked at Tele Atlas North America

    Pros

    Benefits were great.
The ability to take time off when needed/wanted was never a problem.
Work life never really interferes with your personal time.
    Fellow co-workers were always friendly.

    Cons

Upper management has major communication problems.
    Raises and bonuses rarely happen.
Lack of communication between departments and/or teams causes major problems especially between field staff and in-house staff.
Favoritism runs rampant in this company.
A lot of the in-house staff, especially Digital Mapping Technicians get taken advantage of and not compensated properly.
