Pros
You'll work with some great people, within a company that has the best networks and services. It's challenging and rewarding at the same time.
Cons
You'll have to get used to the fact that you'll be working for one of the most despised brands in the country - though admittedly, this is slowly changing.

Get the HR / careers opportunity process working - it really sux and looks to be a waste of money with employees not advised on interview outcomes.

Systems and structure in such a large place reduce work efficiency and are not competitive in the market

Simplify the number of systems in use and how initiatives are built into systems plus improve how data is extracted and presented to management to make the best decisions for the company

Some very good people. No real shortage of money for projects. Opportunity for professional development. The very good redundancy provisions for all staff.

Very uncertain environment. Ongoing reductions in headcount. Too many time servers desperate to hang on. The vast edifice of approvals and processes to check the checker

Clean out the top levels of management in the technology and IT groups. The senior leadership team is seen as being very remote from the ordinary workers.

Pros
Large budgest mean big projects, many of which are innovative and interesting. The speed of the 3G rollout, for example, was both impressive and well executed. The company makes an effort to balance life / work, though not all seem to take it.
Cons
Bureaucratic nonsense can be very frustrating. The company requires change to accommodate privatization and competition, but internal resistance is often a problem. Interdepartmental squabbles can undermine projects. Marketing is often weak, inconsistent and not well thought through, though this does appear to be changing.
Advice to Senior Management
Align department goals across the company and avoid rewarding those engaged in an interdepartmental blame game. Look world wide for best practices in customer service. Take credit for the innovations the company has achieved - and make more employees aware of the significance of these achievements.

Set a coherent strategy. Instil a need for agility, not blind adherence to bureaucratic process. Implement product/service lifecycles. Reduce complexity.

Telstra is an interesting place to work - products and services are routinely in the news, and you get to try out some pretty cool stuff, plus the staff benefits are generally good value.
Cons
There is no training,effectively. Career advancement is slow as treacle, and there's all number of frustrated people trying to get a decent promotion internally.

You have got to sort out the mess with billing, but also work on improving morale - in some business units it's like being on suicide watch.
