    I worked at Telstra

    Pros

Many of their specialists are masters of their craft. If you need something for a project or just want to find out more about best practice, don't reinvent the wheel - it's likely there is already a world class team doing it. Just reach out.

    Cons

The customer is highly valued at 'worker' and senior exec level, however the serried ranks of middle management pay only lip service to customer satisfaction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grasp the nettle, start performance managing some of your long term management out of the organisation - they are damaging your ability to compete. The CEO is a brilliant leader, but he's not getting the value he deserves from the organisation.

I worked at Telstra full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Generally a pretty decent work life balance, flex days etc. If you can get on a big budget project with the right team, you'll get plenty of opportunity to shine.

    Cons

Its a slow moving beast. Management seems VERY risk averse, so its hard to get involved in anything that is truly innovative. Usually stuff gets outsourced to contractors so there is someone to blame if something goes wrong, but that means everything is a long process of proposals, etc

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more risks. Trust your own staff more, let people have an imagination

I worked at Telstra part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The pay is really good for retail - but it would have to be otherwise nobody in their right mind would work for them.

    Cons

The customers, the lack of training and the constant hiring of new and increasingly less competent staff mean that working for Telstra is nothing but stressful and totally not worth the extra few dollars an hour you might make over any other retail jobs. When they got rid of individual commission they lost all of their decent staff.

I have been working at Telstra full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Highly flexible and family friendly. There is always something to do. The people are friendly, knowledgeable and generally good to work with.

    Cons

There are too many things to do. People are being swamped with things to do and the priority shifts regularly. It is a rather reactive company. You fix the next "fire" or do the next priority.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Plan ahead and inform people in advance. People do not like to be informed last minute that you need to do and deploy something in a week or 2 time, of which are always delayed anyway as it is unrealistic.

Provide more visibility. I do not know most of what my managers need until the last minute. Perhaps some kind of visible group goals and incoming goals?

Allocate time to reflect. This "rush" to do things is not giving any time to make things better. Just means that you end up doing more "rush" work that results in poor quality over time.

I have been working at Telstra full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people are the biggest pro! We have some of the best.
The employee discount of 25% is awesome!

    Cons

Some of the managers can be stubborn.
Consultation is not a big push from management and they prefer to do the work in a less then optimal manner.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more flexible at the lower levels, and listen to your staff about matters in the business.
