I have been working at Tenable Network Security full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Quiet, professional, no-nonsense. The workplace is optimized for, and respectful of, WORK: there are no dogs running around, employees don't bring in their squalling children, people who listen to music do so via headphones, and there are no Nerf guns on the premises.

Payroll/benefits get their job done. IT doesn't prevent work. HR is blessedly low-profile, maybe because it's a private company. The offer letter was a single page, and paperwork has been similarly minimal there on out.

4% 401(k) matching is a damn good benefit! There's a year-end bonus, but that is nondeterministic and folks don't gossip enough to provide a sample for even a rule of thumb. Apart from PTO, you get 2 make-your-own-holiday flex days off.

Flexible hours. Few meetings. Management is unobtrusive: it's rather refreshing to not be bombarded with policies / restructurings / initiatives / "company values" announcements.

Cubicles are on the large side, widely spaced, and have 6' walls.

The company doesn't have more money than it knows what to do with.

    Cons

Quality/motivation of engineers (including, surprisingly, some at team lead level) varies: some are perhaps more laid-back than ideal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just keep doing what you're doing, and keep *not* doing the many various stupid / wasteful / risible / annoying things other companies do.

    Pros

Company has a quiet workplace and good work-life balance. It's easy going. Lots of coffee choices. The product is a niche product. It's one of the coolest tech companies in the state of Maryland.

    Cons

There are a handful of very bad managers that make you wonder why they are even working there. They change their minds often, bad mouth other employees, and are more immature than some new college graduates. Additionally, there isn't any real research going on. Tenable's research consists of writing scripts to detect vulnerabilities found by others. If you check the Gartner report, Tenable is the furthest from the leadership quadrant. After working there, you will see why. This is not a place to start your career if you're technical.

    Pros

The software lineup is solid, with a great history behind the core technology of vulnerability analysis. If you're looking for a job with few challenges and like to keep a holiday calendar on your desk, this is the closest thing to government work you will find!

    Cons

Resources are misaligned. Some on the payroll are really just on the payroll, and criticism is not well received. Business development is more like business regression. R&D is stale. The sales department is modeled after the movie "Boiler Room." Engineering/Development management are not to be questioned.

Pay for the most critical positions is well below industry standards. There is also a culture of distrust from every angle.

And no free drinks and snacks!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think more before spending investor dollars. Be more open about product management decisions. Invest in areas that will keep you not only visible in the industry, but to be once again, an innovator. Stop paying people a salary and stock just so you can put their picture on the Web site - make them deliver.

    Pros

This is a great company with an amazing technology culture. Management from Executives to Directors are awesome individuals. The atmosphere is very casual and laid-back, more like a west coast startup environment. Benefits and training are great, and getting better as the company grows.

    Cons

Tenable is a company of experts, so be prepared for expectations to be high. Sometimes office politics get strange and communication between functional groups can be terrible.

I have been working at Tenable Network Security full-time

    Pros

Tenable is technically still a start-up, even though it now takes up the top three floors of a tower, and still aggressively hiring. The increasing staff size hasn't really impacted performance. Iif anything there's a palpable need for more talent.

The best thing about this company, from the perspective of a developer, is that work is scheduled for 8 hours a day, and you're not encouraged to take it home with you. The parking lot is nearly empty by 5:01pm. Almost everyone in the company don't have to worry about 2am texts, That's not to say that employees aren't engaged in their jobs, just that senior management has nurtured a culture that avoids "burnout".

While portions of the codebase date back more than a decade, modern tools and processes are used. Most of the company seems sensitive to falling behind on the tech curve and are will to try new approaches.

    Cons

If you're looking for hip start-up culture, look elsewhere. The walls here are beige. The sodas are in a vending machine, not freely available from the fridge.

There's also an odd stinginess with cheap things like office supplies and gear. Dry erase markers are a surprisingly valuable commodity.

    Pros

A lot of very smart people work for Tenable. The software is excellent, and you can learn a lot if you are interested in network/system security. Compensation is on par, office culture is very friendly and small business like.

    Cons

There didn't seem to be much room for advancement.

    Pros

This company is great. It has every you would look for in an IT company: a solid core of products, solid customer base, good pay, good benefits and good people. I feel like Tenable generally cares about the moral (not just the productivity) of their employees.

    Cons

None that I can think of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing. I think that they trust their employees to get their work done rather than overly micromanage everything. Management is balanced between having expectations met and allowing for personal freedom to get it done.

I have been working at Tenable Network Security full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible work environment - lots of tele work
company perks - sponsored movie nights, picnics, amusement parks etc
    employee event bonding events
can move career from one department to another

    Cons

Communication issues across the company. Seems like two separate companies internally - Nessus vs Enterprise products
Development, QA, Engineering and Sales are never in sync
Too many changes in product direction and not enough communication from upper management to sales

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better compensation that meets market values
Don't rely on self reviews on a yearly basis and no feedback from management
Communication of company direction and products to sales and engineering more frequently
