The Hague (Netherlands)

I worked at Teradata full-time for more than 8 years

Prosgreat company, gives you enough opportunities to learn and grow, world leading in enterprise data warehousing, you learn the best from the best about EDW

Consnot business consulting oriented, rather more technical consultancy

Advice to Senior ManagementHire LOTS of business architects and business consultants and drive your sales top down rather than middle level management downwards

Freedom to be as creative as you are capable

Program Manager (Current Employee)
Denver, CO

I have been working at Teradata full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood pay...bonus and other benefits...leading edge company on the forefront of BIG data and analytics. great opportunities for advancement. They also are very understanding and supportive of a great balance between work and life and do realize you have a family.

ConsAs with any large organization, politics, unfortunately, play a part in the company culture. For example, spinning off as our own corporate entity from NCR gave us an opportunity to fix some of the previous culture's broken processes. Instead of fixing them, we took them lock, stock, and barrel and will "fix them later". That's just a silly management decision and, of course, they still have not been fixed, three years later.

Advice to Senior ManagementLISTEN to your people. You tout them as experts, but don't listen when they suggest opportunities for organizational improvements

Awe full place to work been with the company for 7 years.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Teradata full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe Training and that is it.

ConsNo career path at all. Management will tell you that you have a path and either change it or make it impossible to do. Field Tech don't have a balance for work/life. If you are new forget having a life out side of work you will be put on call all the time and told when you can and can't take vacations. Management will look the other way when a fellow employee harass you and do anything to cover it up so HR does not get wind of it.

Non R&D employee

Director (Current Employee)

I have been working at Teradata full-time for more than 5 years

ProsStability, longevity -- there are a number of employees with over 20 years of tenure.

Data warehouse and analytic products

ConsLack of vision; politics; difficulty in awarding promotions to team members; there is a focus on the lowest cost option for internal systems rather than considering impact on worker productivity; work space is cramped and dark

Advice to Senior ManagementInspire the troops, don't hide in your office; stop letting your sales regions run the company; invest in growth; Lead

Great products and excellent co-workers

Business Analyst (Former Employee)
Dayton, OH

I worked at Teradata full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat coworkers and challenging work

ConsThere is no mobility for younger workers. The hours are terrible for those working in finance areas of the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive the younger associates a chance to move up in the organization. There is little to no mobility for folks in their 20s.

Time to grow up maybe?

Solutions Architect (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Teradata full-time for more than 8 years

ProsFirstly, your peers in the 'trenches' are really fantastic people. For the most part they are highly intelligent, really generous with their time, and all around wonderful people.

Other good reasons to work here:
Free coffee
Free soda
Free snacks
Bathrooms
Clean office environment
Professional
Good 401k
Good legal plan benefits
Employee Stock Purchase Program

ConsPoor pay and poor bonus (Annual Incentive Plan for non PS, is 7.5%)
Poor expectation management from managers, poor at setting goals
Get it done or get out attitude
Culture of accountability translates to culture of finger pointing
Poor business process and almost no implementation of CMMI whatsoever
Antiquated ideologies about research and development, good senior management, terrible middle management
Antiquated products with bloated features and poor architecture
Management has severe tunnel vision, most development managers have little experience actually developing, employees are rated subjectively
Fiefdom culture, every senior leader has their own little castle which they run their own way, 'fights' happen, lots of political overhead.
Promotions are non existent, yearly raises are consistently 2%, I'm pretty sure that when you account for average inflation, that means you're making less than you did the year before.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire a business process consultant that will do more than generate a report of how poor you're doing. The majority of your workforce is old and is extremely set in their ways, you're a slow moving dinosaur, the people leaving are the ones with new ideas, talent is walking out your door.

Promote from within, grow your employees and listen to their feedback, pay them better, give them a performance based bonus instead of tying your bonus to company wide goals that they have no influence on.

Get rid of your middle management, ask any lay employee and they will all tell you that the majority of middle management is worthless at this company. Don't promote self management if you're not going to give your employees vertical latitude.
