I have been working at Thales Avionics full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The company is very flexible in terms of how employees are treated. Vacation is generous and flexible. Hours are very flexible, within reason. Pay is decent, not exceptional. The company has been through a couple of layoffs since 2008, but my department has managed to stay intact. The company seems to be stable and solvent, often with enough money to expand into additional buildings or improve existing ones. The company is always looking to improve processes, and employee input is welcomed. Employees are not micromanaged, and in fact encouraged to work independently. Teamwork is encouraged.

    Cons

The company appears to be playing catch-up with its competitors. Technologically, the products are cutting edge, but delivering on promises to customers is somewhat suspect. While the company claims to promote from within, it is lacking in that respect. More often than not, outside candidates are brought in to fill vacancies that should go to internal candidates, for a variety of reasons. Pay raises are minimal, although regular, for the majority of employees. Until recently an archaic accounting/inventory management system has throttled productivity, but change is in the works.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should consider a strong effort to promote from or fill vacancies from within, and should adopt a culture of process improvement. Listen to the employees who know what they are talking about, make sure any changes to policies and processes are for improvement, not just for the sake of change.

    Pros

    None except the 4-week PTO

    Cons

It is 8:00 PM on a Friday night and you want to leave. Suddenly someone tells you there are issues and management wants them done before Monday.

You are required to work weekends and overnight with no overtime pay. Do not complain, do not question, just work. No life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop making your people work so late. Having to constantly work weekends and nights indicates poor management and scheduling.

    I worked at Thales Avionics

    Pros

Here is why you should work here or try to get in
    1. Ample PTO starting at 4 weeks and continues to almost 2 months
    2. You can have time to drop kids, pickup, have lunch do shopping as needed
    3. Lot of time to then finish your work...

    Cons

    - Lousy culture
    - Old folks from Aviation companies who don't want to change or inject energy and energetic people
    - Feel threatened if a smarter person suggests or brings things to the table
    - Want the best with least possible pay...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the people (third and fourth layers of management). Acquire talent that can be efficient, more organized and most fast with changing time. White hair and years of experience always does not mean you have wise people.

I worked at Thales Avionics full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits
Great place for interns and college grads to get experience and move on

    Cons

Not enough resources or tools to complete activities in expected timeframes
    Unreasonable expectations
    More talk than action
    Extremely poor planning and communication
IT is a disabler and seems to be smaller than a mom and pop shop
    Good people don't stay long

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find leaders that want to change things not talk about them. Start with the top of HR. HR doesn't even exist anymore. They became worse than when there were only three HR folks.

    Pros

Never boring and constantly challenging...good benefits.

    Cons

Too many silos. Groups within engineering don't communicate and it's worse between engineering and other departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move to PM led IPTs to tear down the silos.
