I worked at Thales Avionics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Great health benefits
    - 4% matched and vested 401K + 2% retirement
    - 4 weeks vacation
    - If you are a new grad, this is the place to come and enter and make mistakes while you learn because Thales management is very forgiving. If you are seasoned, you might not like this.

    Cons

    - Managers going to people's desks Friday evenings to make them work weekends. Weekend work usually means sitting there in case someone who is testing the system has questions. Most of the time you just waste your weekend sitting there. The director of software engineering can rub people in the wrong way, specially when he promises to come to work weekends along side of you and never shows up. However other directors, like the director of system engineering, she is always willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
    - Lack of organizational skills. Managers promise clients impossible deadlines, but the projects are always late and very poorly organized. Products always have a lot of problems upon release; its really annoying.
    - Each year the tools change for you to do your job. Seems like Thales doesn't recognize that its the company culture that is the problem and not the tools. So expect to use svn one year, git the next, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a clue about your company. You think just hiring more people is going to make things work? You need to get organized.

I have been working at Thales Avionics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Awesome benefits and bonus. Also, flexible time schedules.

    Cons

Management. There are no clear defined processes in place. As a result, management makes you do other people's jobs and holds you accountable for them.

Management here is very unprofessional and use every excuse to make you do other people's tasks. Also, management tends to insult you in private, when others are not around. Foul language is used in closed door meetings and actions / tasks are never quite clearly communicated to the teams.

This place has the worst management. They do not care for their people. They just care to get the job done, no matter who does it. You can be a Technician or you can be an Engineer, but management will expect you to do the job of a Program Manager or a Buyer.

The environment is very unprofessional and I would highly advise against working here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to communicate to their teams a lot better. Do not just use the title of "manager" to get tasks and actions completed your way. Listen to advise from the people that actually do the work, and if any decisions are made for changes, it is best if you include the departments involved, who's changes will be affected by.

The use of foul language is greatly unprofessional. Furthermore, management needs to provide training for its people. Do not hire people and expect the workers themselves to train the person you hired. It is your responsibility as a manager to train them and inform them what they need to do. Do not "delegate" the responsibility of training the person you hired to one of your workers. That is very unprofessional and it just makes management look pathetic.

Furthermore, training is a huge gap. Management tends to hire people who are not competent.

overall, I would advise to management that if the trend continues, you will lose a lot of people.

I have been working at Thales Avionics full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The company is very flexible in terms of how employees are treated. Vacation is generous and flexible. Hours are very flexible, within reason. Pay is decent, not exceptional. The company has been through a couple of layoffs since 2008, but my department has managed to stay intact. The company seems to be stable and solvent, often with enough money to expand into additional buildings or improve existing ones. The company is always looking to improve processes, and employee input is welcomed. Employees are not micromanaged, and in fact encouraged to work independently. Teamwork is encouraged.

    Cons

The company appears to be playing catch-up with its competitors. Technologically, the products are cutting edge, but delivering on promises to customers is somewhat suspect. While the company claims to promote from within, it is lacking in that respect. More often than not, outside candidates are brought in to fill vacancies that should go to internal candidates, for a variety of reasons. Pay raises are minimal, although regular, for the majority of employees. Until recently an archaic accounting/inventory management system has throttled productivity, but change is in the works.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should consider a strong effort to promote from or fill vacancies from within, and should adopt a culture of process improvement. Listen to the employees who know what they are talking about, make sure any changes to policies and processes are for improvement, not just for the sake of change.
