I have been working at The American College full-time

    Pros

The people you work with quickly become family. Tons of vacation time and you're gonna need it

    Cons

cold calling people who have never heard of the school and have no interest all day. Expected to sale right away with no book of business and no leads

    Advice to Management

get with the 21st century and hire a marketing company to bring in some serious leads. Cold calling is ok but it can't be the only form of marketing

I worked at The American College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good for entry level workers. If you are just graduating from college, this might be a nice place to get work experience. Generally, the people are very nice.

    Cons

Organizationally, this place needs a lot of work. There are several people placed into positions they are not qualified to do. Good luck trying to get promoted at this place when you deserve it. They operate on favoritism, at least that's how it was in my department.

    Advice to Management

Don't hire people based off a revenue generating "idea." Take the time to think about their day-to-day tasks. You also might want to consider who you have in management and how their lack of experience affects the people they supervise. Lastly, if a work dynamic is functioning well, don't try to change it.

I worked at The American College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

5 weeks PTO "Educational institution" so days off for bad weather New CEO so maybe positive changes are coming

    Cons

People are placed in management positions regardless of experience and having no idea how to be a successful manager. No training provided whatsoever to understand outdated, inefficient systems that are used for day to day functions. No communication between marketing and academics, leading to nonproductive educational offerings. Lots of office gossip and an uptight atmosphere where you feel like you're constantly walking on eggshells. Questionable business practices.

    Advice to Management

Require management positions to have prior experience and invest in training your employees to promote growth and interest in your mission.

    Pros

5 weeks PTO so you can get away.

    Cons

CEO hates the peasants. He has been there 10+ years and all he does is fire people and cut benefits. There's no sign it will stop even though they are at minimum staffing levels. Morale is very, very low but the idiot CEO thinks it's high.

    Advice to Management

Step down and let real managers take over.

    Pros

It is a good place to begin and gain some experience. Output is high, but not always high-level.

    Cons

Politics, very poor management, a cowboy CEO, a dishonest environment, and poor work culture.

    Advice to Management

You should consider changing your culture if you want to be relevant in the years to come.

    Pros

The benefits are very good and inexpensive, and the College offers a great deal of paid time off- about twenty five days a year for starting employees. The work day is also short- about seven and a half hours as opposed to the usual eight or nine.

    Cons

Senior management is VERY uninvolved with the "peasantry" as I call it- I have only met or spoken to the President once in the last 14 months, and the various department heads and departments don't communicate with each other or with the employees unless they're absolutely forced to. The compensation is low, and they have fought me tooth and nail every time I've asked for a raise.

    Advice to Management

The first piece of advice I would give senior management is to take a hard ground-up look at every manager in the building. A lot of managers and experienced employees are coasting along through the work day at this point, or they're presenting once face to their employees and another to senior management. Additionally, fighting every request for a raise- or openly telling employees that the standards for who gets promoted when aren't uniform (I was actually told that I was so smart I had to work twice as hard to get the same promotion as another employee) does NOT endear you to the people that work here.

    Cons

Upper management lacks integrity. CEO is a narcissist and micro manages everything.Call center has high turnover. Management does not understand the need for new relational database and continues to drain the budget with people soft band aid fixes

    Advice to Management

Remove many of the incompetent senior management

I have been working at The American College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Small and know most of the employees in the building. Nice area. Good for a first job out of college. Five weeks vacation.

    Cons

No room for growth. CEO has a very top down, sexist way of thinking. Salaries are way below average. They pile up more responsibility on you without the compensation because they're a "non profit organization". No yearly bonuses even though you're told that when hired. Very political, if you're not in with certain groups, you're a nobody.
